Dude there most likely built. I see people go through them all day long in drift. Talking from large experience here. Sorry tho I mean I just believe in doing things right the first time the right way.

I'm about 90% sure they aren't built. Why spend the extra money on building a W58 when you could have an R154? haha

Anyway, hopefully all will be ready by ST. PATRICKS DAY!

A friend of mine has a 1u ae86 with w58. It works, but at stock power he's already chunked 3 gearboxes. And the car weighs a million pounds less than the z30. He drives like I assume you will, so. Plan to go through a lot of transmissions.

I understand that this car seems like it is being built on a budget. Your rational beind the W58 makes no sense. How many trannys will you go through before you swap to a stronger box which could have saved o the headache in the long run? I just don't get it. It's going to be more expensive in the long run.

And no one builds W58's. They have an inherent design flaw that makes them weak. Everything possible has been done to them to make them last. They always break.

I would of bought the car for $1000 for the black interior! For sure you made some back for your build selling it

Wish you would take the advice everyone is giving man! r154 is the way to go, your not to deep into the build to change your plans. It would be worth it in the long run.

It isn't that I'm tuning out the advice. I see it a million times on all Toyota/Lexus forums. But, I'm really just looking to get the car running and do a shake down. The W58 was sitting at the shop, so why not use it? IF the W58 doesn't work out, so be it. I'll switch transmissions.

But for right now, it's going to be a W58. So please stop hounding me

Thanks for all the comments, advice, and appreciation!

W58. No idea why he'd try using a lesser gearbox.

Just because the box is there doesn't mean you should use it. Your going to spend more going with w58 and all the needed swap parts then switching to r154 than to just go r154 ONCE. Do it right the first time or don't do it at all.

I was just curious, no need to lash out lol.

Anyway, I've been using the same w58 for a really long time. My MKIII was turbo 1uz with the SAME w58. I was running about 9, sometimes 12 psi. Hell I even towed my friend's ford ranger out of the mud with the MKIII with the same transmission.

Fast forward to today, I'm using the same W58 in my SC400 that I did in the mkIII. granted the SC isn't turbo or anything, but it doesn't grind or anything like that either.

I used the W58 because at the time, they only offered the W58 swap. I see both sides of the story though. He already has the swap parts, and if it fails, he can probalby sell the swap kit for a pretty penny regardless.

Ideally, (as he already knows) R154 would be the way to go. However the added cost of the R154 and modifying it work in our chassis is a bit of a big deal. Believe it or not, the W58 doesn't sit exactly right in the SC4's like htey do the the SC3's. Though it's VERY close, it's still not perfect. My shifter didn't line up, I had to modify it, and that using the shifter from a 92-94 SC3.

w58 will probably hold up. 1uz doesent make all that much power so it should be fine.

My W58 - 1UZ is still going strong, put it in over the summer and I love how smooth this box is.

No pictures to update with, but got a lot done. Finished getting EVERYTHING out of the interior and trunk. Hopefully I will start getting all the sound deadening out next week and prep for cage!

In the following weeks I should have some updates that included test fitting the W58 kit with clutch and mounting as well as pulling the engine and disassembling!

Thanks,

Andrew

I just picked up a R154 from craigslist for $500. I have seen them around that price quite a few times.
