I would first look at what's important for the need to change wheels... do you want something light and strong to increase efficiency and performance, or looks are all that matters. once you decide, than look at wheels available in that category. Since cast wheels that just looks good vs forged wheels that are light can be a big difference in price.
Look in the wheels thread to see pictures of what others have on their car for ideas. Wheels are a personal taste thing just like food. What looks good to someone may not look good in your eyes.

The wheels thread on the forum is great! I probably went over the entire thread twice...I'll never get that time back, but it was well spent.
At the end of the day, I chose wheels that were not on the thread, but had the flavor of a few different ones.
The color of my IS dictated my options to some extent as well.
I hope to add my own wheel pic to the thread this weekend. Let's hope they look as good in my head, as they will hopefully do on the vehicle.

Than you're probably more interested in forged light weight wheels a couple of big brands are Volk Racing by Rays Engineering or Advan by Yokohama Wheels. There are other brands out there too, but the two mentioned are probably some of the lightest out there. Be prepare to pay a pretty penny thou 
Also, if your roads allow, going up to 19" will allow you to have more rims and less tires which works out even lighter.
Eg: Stock F-sport wheels + tires are
Front: 49.9lbs
Rear: 53.6lbs
taking the Volk Racing G27 19x8.5 with Perelli P Zero in 235/35/19 front and 255/30/19 rear:
Total weight is 41 lbs front and 42lbs rear.. now that's a big saving in weight of about 9lbs per corner.

255 will probably not clear the front suspension components. I've tried out my old set of rims and tires from my Subaru STi before I sold them, they were 245 on 9" wide rim, the tire does rub against the upper part of the knuckle when the car is turning. Going with lower offset rims will fix the rubbing on inside issue, but you than run into rubbing fender issues. Also if you're trying to go for a performance setup, why waste money on wider tires and rims than what the car needs... that just adds more weight back to the equation again.

I was debating the same as to stay with a staggered or go square.
At the end I got a deal on a 20" square setup I couldn't say no to, and it's a forged wheel...and it's a rim I wanted. At least I can rotate them now.
I would consider if you are shelling out for rims, at least upsize to the 19"...whether you go staggered or not.

What does everyone do about their TPMS light with aftermarket wheels? Does the TPMS light affect not being able to turn the traction control off?

Swap the TPMS over to the aftermarket wheels. In some cases you may need the TPMS adapter/mount from the wheel manufacturer, but most can be straight swapped over.
