hey guys,

got a ticket in surrey last night for "unnecessary noise"
the cop says my exhaust is too loud. i do have a muffler on there, plus the cats, so its fairly (i use the word "fairly" very loosely) close to stock. anyone have had the same problem?

is there a decibel limit as far as noise? he had no way of measure my exhaust, it was solely based on his opinion.
he says its too loud, mind you, this was at 2am, with no other cars on the road.

i want to dispute the ticket.

by law, the readings are suppose to be 84dBs for cars, and 89dBs for bikes.

however there are many cars that come stock with figures past these numbers.

so dont know what to say, there is some defined measurement guidelines ( i think it was like from 5ft away from the exhaust in quiet room with no background noise) but dont hold me on this.

i would say, if u really think ur right, go have it tested with a decibel meter first. if ur readings are around those numbers, then u should go dispute it.

what's the section number in the MVAR that you violated? Cause I think there's two.

thanks! ill need to find a place that can test it for me. i dont think an iphone app is legit.

so i looked up the mva at work today. i was really productive.
turns out he didnt really give me a ticket for the lack of stock muffler.
i got a ticket for:

7A.01 No person shall start, drive, turn or stop any motor vehicle, or accelerate the vehicle engine while the vehicle is stationary, in a manner which causes any loud and unnecessary noise in or from the engine, exhaust system or the braking system, or from the contact of the tires with the roadway.

is this another word for "burn out" or "drag race"
i barely pulled off once the light turned green, because i was making the next left not even half a block away.

this is what the MVA states:

Muffler

7.03 (1) A motor vehicle propelled by an internal combustion engine shall be equipped with an exhaust muffler consisting of a series of pipes or chambers which ensures that the exhaust gases from the engine are cooled and expelled without excessive noise.

Alteration prohibited

(4) No person shall drive or operate a motor vehicle propelled by an internal combustion engine equipped with a muffler the exhaust outlet of which has been opened or widened.

Vehicle noise

27 A motor vehicle shall be equipped with an exhaust muffler which complies with section 7.03 of the regulations.

The opinion of an inspector as to whether the engine and exhaust noise is greater than that made by other vehicles in good condition of comparable size, horsepower, piston displacement or compression ratio shall determine whether exhaust gases are expelled with excessive noise.

a lot of cars fail those right off the bet

I see a lot of relative references in there ... someone needs to clarify those parts of the act.

the MVA is very vague on this point leaving large room for interpretation. until the day they decide to actually update it, there will always be a chance for anyone to be busted.
