Of all the things for the govt to mandate be included in vehicles, is AM radio really a top priority?

https://www.cleveland.com/news/2023/...-am-radio.html

I find it hilarious that this article uses a picture of a 19 year old radio to demonstrate"radio screens in newer cars"....

‘This is the reason

“It described AM radio as providing invaluable information during local emergencies and natural disasters like tornados, floods and wildfires, and said it’s particularly important for rural Americans to have access to AM radio which is free to all Americans and doesn’t require a subscription or broadband connection”

As far as weather alerts go, back in the 90s and early 2000s, U.S.-market Subarus used to come standard, from the factory, with a built-in Tone-Alert NOAA Weather Radio, which provided 24/7 weather information, on UHF frequencies, for the area one was driving in. As time went on, the bean-counters won out (as with many other features on Subarus of that vintage), and the Weather radio was dropped. I did not have it on my 2006 Outback.

Generally speaking, the only reason a congressperson is going to take an interest in something like this is because someone somewhere with a financial interest in the cause in question is paying them.

lobbying dollars are everywhere. Always follow the money. Your congressperson does,

I think there is an argument to be made there...I didn't think of that

My 2023 Volvo V60 Polestar Recharge doesn’t have AM radio as well. Personally I haven’t listened to AM radio in a very long time and don’t feel the need to revisit. There are many apps that can accomplish this, as was referred to. With the exceptional sound system in the vehicle it would be a shame to spend a lot of time listening to AM, just a personal view

YMMV

So what happens when the internet goes down and you need to know the news about the emergency in your area?

What about those passing through a town on the interstate or a highway. Many times I see check radio station 1010 for local information.

I just don't see what the big issue is keeping AM in a car.

Even though I have used AM radio zero times in the past 20 years, and expect the next 20 years to be the same, I don't think there's any issue in keeping it around as long as there's an FM tuner.

your point is a good one but i’m pretty sure your cell phone, without internet, will be keeping you informed of a local emergency. As far as Federal the President will be broadcasting over just about every way possible if he needs to speak to us. I think it’s a mistake eliminating it, just another way to save a couple of bucks.

Up to the mods, but IMO this thread can be closed. Although there are a few who think otherwise (and we have to respect that view), a large majority have spoken here......AM is no longer needed.

OK close the thread but you don't get the last word. You should have left your opinion out of the request.

AM poses no major cost and should be included in all vehicles. AM is a large business that doesn't need to be eliminated. Millions of truckers use it overnight for news and entertainment.
