BEST-EVER FIRST QUARTER AND MARCH SALES FOR KIA AMERICA

04/01/23 ID: 20209Fast-Growing Kia Posts Eighth Straight Monthly Sales Record and Finishes 15-Percent Over Previous First Quarter Record
  • Second-highest monthly sales total in Kia America’s history in March
  • Four popular Kia models also set March sales records
IRVINE, Calif., March 31, 2023 – Building on 2022’s best-ever market share achievement, Kia America opened 2023 with a record first quarter of 184,136 units, a 15-percent increase over the previous high set in 2021.

Kia’s March total of 71,294 marked the second-highest monthly performance in company history and was the eighth consecutive month of record-breaking sales. March sales were up 19.8-percent over the same period last year and up 7-percent over the previous March record. In addition, four Kia models – Carnival up 81-percent, Sportage up 37-percent, Telluride up 23-percent, Forte up 14-percent – achieved best-ever March totals while the brand’s electrified models increased 10-percent over the same period last year.

“Kia’s record first-quarter is a direct result of our consistent efforts to build our brand, improve residual values, and deliver world-class models with cutting-edge design and innovative technology,” said Eric Watson, vice president, sales operations, Kia America. “Kia’s transformation will continue to accelerate as production availability of important SUVs and in-demand electrified vehicles improves throughout the year.”

In addition to the monthly and first-quarter record-breaking sales performances, several significant industry awards were bestowed on various models within Kia’s world-class line-up, including:
  • Nine Kia models were named to the 2023 Car and Driver Editors’ Choice Awards list. The winners, all 2023 model year vehicles, include the Sportage, Sorento, Carnival, Niro Hybrid and PHEV, K5, Soul, Rio, and the Car and Driver 10Best-winning EV6 and Telluride (four-time winner), represent the publication’s annual standard of automotive excellence.
  • Three Kia models achieved top honors in the annual “Best Cars for Families” rankings presented by the editors of U.S. News & World Report. The rugged and refined 2023 Kia Telluride SUV was named “Best 3-Row SUV for Families” for the fourth consecutive year, the all-electric 2023 Kia EV6 performance crossover was chosen as the first “Best Electric Vehicle for Families,” and the 2023 Kia K5 sedan earned its first title as “Best Midsize Car for Families.”
  • Two Kia models were selected as top three finalists in two categories for the 2023 World Car Awards. The 2023 Kia Niro earned a position among the top three finalists for the World Car of the Year category, while the 2023 Kia EV6 GT was named a finalist in the World Performance Car category. The vehicles were selected by a jury of 100 distinguished international automotive journalists representing 32 countries, who evaluated a broad range of vehicles from around the world.
  • The 2023 Kia Niro was also named the 2023 Women’s World Car of the Year, which follows the model’s “Urban Car of the Year” award from the all-women association earlier this year. The jury panel ultimately recognized the Niro as the overall “Supreme Winner” among all other category winners.

It's pretty clear that 1st quarter sales results are nothing short of disastrous for Toyota. Numbers are still pouring in, but most manufacturers are posting solid gains vs. 2022, some of them double digit. Except Toyota, with sales drop of nearly 10%.

(source: GCBC)

GM comfortably recovered its 1st place. Ford won't publish numbers until tomorrow, but should post similar gains. Toyota will likely fall to 3rd place on a clear downward trend.

Toyota did well in 2022 because of supply chain issues that hit other manufactures harder. But now that supply chain issues have been mostly resolved, and consumers have more choices, it's clear that Toyota's lineup is outdated and uncompetitive. In 2022 people bought a lot of Toyotas simply because they had no other choice.

Highlander sales are down by 16%. Same with RAV. No surprise here, considering how poorly they compare vs. competition.
4Runner is down a whopping 40%. Somebody forgot to tell Toyota that event mighty dinosaurs become extinct when confronted with more nimble competitors.

Two local dealers in my area have nearly 200 Toyotas in inventory each. Some of their cars have been lingering on the lot for over 100 days. One is offering Camrys, Corollas and non-hybrid RAVs at 2 to 5% below MSRP. The other is offering these models at invoice price. Hybrids are still in short supply, but nobody wants Camrys, Corollas, and non-hybrid RAVs and Highlanders anymore.

Consumers want EVs and electrified SUVs. Hyundai/KIA plug-in hybrids are selling like crazy. Just another example of the damage that Akio Toyota did to a once great company, and why he was sacked.

^^ that's why we need raw sales data not press releases from auto makers that sugar coat everything. Or rename this thread automakers embellish sales numbers.

Toyoda was only technically fired, he actually moved up in rank.

Yup. The only Toyota models that did well are HEVs and PHEVs. Consumers want electrified vehicles. GM, Ford, Hyundai/KIA, Nissan - they all positioned themselves well with plenty of electrified vehicles capacity, while Toyota HEV and PHEV is capacity-constrained. Akio's "romance" with hydrogen is costing Toyota dearly.

Ford Becomes America’s Best-Selling Brand in the First Quarter on Rising Sales for Trucks, Vans, Broncos, Large SUVs, EVs, Mustang

Apr 4, 2023 | Dearborn
  • Ford is America’s best-selling brand in Q1 with total vehicle sales of 456,972, up 10.7 percent on the strength of icons like F-Series, Bronco and Mustang, commercial vehicles and EVs
  • Ford becomes America’s No. 1 selling truck manufacturer – sales up 19.6 percent and outselling GM’s combined truck and van sales
  • F-Series is America’s best-selling truck with sales up 21.1 percent totaling 170,377 pickups – outpacing Silverado by 46,000 trucks
  • Explorer is the best-selling, three-row midsize SUV and Expedition sales double
  • Ford EV sales up 41.0 percent
  • Ford is increasing production capacity across Ford Blue, Model e, and Ford Pro and will continue through the year to meet customer demand
Dearborn, Mich., April 4, 2023 – Ford’s iconic vehicles, commercial and EVs drove a first-quarter sales increase of 10.7 percent making the Blue Oval America’s best-selling brand.

Sales surged across Ford’s areas of strength, including trucks (up 19.6 percent); three-row SUVs (up 47.6 percent); Bronco brand (up 18.3 percent); Ford Pro Transit van (up 86.0 percent); Mustang (up 5.2 percent) and electric vehicles (up 41.0 percent).

Ford’s overall vehicle sales – Ford Blue, Ford Pro, Model e and Lincoln – totaled 475,906, up 10.1 percent with estimated share up over a year ago.

Ford’s EV sales grew 41.0 percent in the first quarter on sales of 10,866 electric vehicles. F-150 Lightning sales totaled 4,291 pickups with production capacity actions on track to hit an annual production run rate of 150,000 this year. Sales by Ford Pro of the E-Transit, America’s best-selling electric van last year, climbed 62.7 percent. Reflecting downtime at the plant for changes to increase production, Mustang Mach-E sales were down.

Ford is America’s No. 1 selling truck manufacturer, with 254,023 trucks and vans sold in the first quarter, outselling GM’s trucks and vans by approximately 27,000 vehicles. Sales of Ford’s overall trucks, including pickups and vans, were up 19.6 percent on the strength of F-Series pickups (up 21.1 percent) and Ford Pro’s Transit van (up 86.0 percent).

To support this momentum, Ford’s Kansas City Assembly Plant will add a third crew in April to increase production for Ford Pro of the best-selling Transit and E-Transit vans. Ford also is increasing production at manufacturing plants across North America to meet strong customer demand for vehicles including Mustang Mach-E, F-150 Lightning, Bronco Sport and Maverick.

"Ford is off to a fast start to the year. Ford’s sales growth and investments are a direct result of strong customer demand across our truck, SUV, and electric vehicle segments. And this year’s highly anticipated new product launches with Super Duty, Escape, Mustang and Ranger, will only add to this momentum,” said Andrew Frick, vice president, sales distribution, and trucks.

Ford Explorer was the best-selling, three-row midsize SUV in America, and the red-hot Bronco brand saw sales growth of 18.3 percent, including a 37.6 percent rise for Bronco. Additionally, Expedition sales surged.

BlueCruise, Ford’s driver assist technology, is now available on 186,000 vehicles; customers have accumulated more than 55 million hands-free miles driven with the technology. Consumer Reports rated Ford BlueCruise as the top-rated active driving assistance system.

Forester sales for March 2023 increased 56.2 percent, and Ascent sales increased 43.2 percent compared to March 2022. In addition, 513 of the all-electric Solterra SUV were delivered in March.

“Enthusiasm for Subaru vehicles remained high in March, and we anticipate continued excitement as the weather warms up and car buyers begin planning spring and summer adventures,” said Troy Poston, Senior Vice President of Sales. “Car buyers have a lot to look forward to in Q2, starting with the global debut of the latest Subaru Wilderness vehicle at the New York International Auto Show later this week.”
