Is it just me?
Or am I falling behind the times?
Am I getting too old?

The hood is long, so I'd prefer the trunk to be longer to balance the hood out.
Am I right?

I would be disappointed if Lexus put 4x L's eg " L L L L" at the back of their vehicles.

People are putting colorful LED strips around their gutters, around their awnings, around their doors & windows, around their skirting, under benchtops & kickboards.
Is this all too much, or is it just me?
Am I falling behind?
Just imagine putting chrome trims around everything like doors, taillights, wing mirrors, rear vision mirrors, sun visors and grab handles etc?

A friend of mine put colorful LED strips around the aluminium gutter and fascia of his house, and 7 years ago, he used to switch the LED's on, but now either the LED's have broken down, or he just no longer switches the LED's on.

Just me, but I like to think in terms of "functionality" - the LED's must serve a functional purpose.

I agree with you. It feels like the "3rd box" trunk areas have been getting more sloped and fat and losing definition. Everything evolving to a fastback shape unfortunately.

I still think the current Audi A6 is the best proportioned 3-box sedan in the midsize exec segment today.

3-box? Hardly. That design is one-box in front for the engine, a humpback/coupe roof in the middle, and maybe a tiny one-quarter-box in the back for a trunk LOL.

A TRUE 3-box design, which we have not seen in a number of years, was the VW Jetta.

I've always liked the proportions of the A6. I like the E Class too. Here's the 2023 G30 5 Series which I've always liked (I have one). The segment is so competitive between the big 3 German brands it makes for some interesting comparisons.

Just me only, but I reckon that the new 5 Series, like the new E Class, has a very short rear trunk compared to the long hood for the in-line six; new E Class even shorter tailed than new 5 Series.

I like the traditional 3-box proportions of the original calendar 2012-15 4GS more, but I could just be way behind the times.
Even old 2003-10 BMW E60 5 Series has nice nose to tail proportions.
Ditto old 2002-09 W210 Mercedes E Class.
The latest tails look too short to me.
I might be getting too old.

no, that's just a box...

a car can still have a well defined trunk lid and not look like every little kid's first attempt at drawing lol

IMO, traditional 1996-03 BMW E39 5 Series has a lovely hood:trunk ratio.
Not only is new E Class tail short, but it looks too "pinched" too.
Perhaps just my old tastes...

Even old 2016-23 W213 E Class had a smaller snout, yet a longer and less pinched tail?

yes but the trunk space goes back under the parcel (rear window) shelf, and to the rear seats, which usually are folding, making the trunk space quite good. if you need more space, the world has decided cuv/suv's are the way to go. someone i know just bought a lexus is300. not a huge car for sure. they opened the trunk and i was quite surprised how roomy it is.

if you don't mind sharing, what do you drive? most people end up preferring a particular 'era' of design that was meaningful in their lives. i personally find that pretty much ALL styling doesn't age well.
not only that, design and manufacturing methods, material science, drivetrains, and everything evolves so much that to me, old cars mostly just look... old.

especially as the M5 it's one of the all time great sedan designs... oh and thanks for giving a shoutout to my W211! this angle in particular i think looks awesome

i think the new E-class still looks good overall but i don't think quite as well captures the classy aspect of older models

The 4th-gen GS has a tiny prestige gap for a RWD car because it's got an extremely short wheelbase for the segment (112.2 inches), not helped by the facelift giving it the predator grille's massive front overhang. It's the exact same wheelbase as the prior third generation, meaning the GS effectively has the proportions of RWD cars that were a decade older like the E60 5 Series. Just for reference, 112.2 inches is the exact same wheelbase as the current generation 3 Series. The Crown sedan and Mirai that came out after the GS based on the TNGA-L platform has a longer wheelbase and thus the proportions are much more contemporary to match that of the G30 5 Series.

The proportions of the new E-Class are pretty much perfect in my eyes. The G60 has very wonky proportions because BMW gave it a huge front overhang and raised it up to accommodate the battery, making it look like a FWD car. But it still looks far more contemporary than the GS because it has a much longer wheelbase and prestige gap.

I would hope it does since it's a class higher. The 3 is the rival to the 5 kinda....the 5 series is above it IMO but under the S while the 7 is firmly above the S

I do agree that the stars in the taillights are cheesy

The funny part is I have found in real life people don’t even notice they’re Mercedes symbols. I guess it’s because the three pointed star doesn’t have a ring around it.

Lol, the Lexus design is twice as good since it has twice as many logos

But seriously, I don't see a problem with any of this.

If that were the case, it certainly wouldn't be new for the 5 series, as it has sported an inline six since.....well since there has been a 5 series. The very first E12 had several I6s on offer in 1972. Straight sixes have been the 5's bread and butter ever since.
