  • Kia’s electrified offerings up 40-percent over first-half 2022 total, with total SUV sales increasing by 25-percent
IRVINE, Calif., June 30, 2023 – Continuing momentum from 2022’s record retail sales, Kia America set an all-time first half volume record of 394,333 vehicles, up 18-percent over the first-half of 2022. Kia’s retail-only sales total for the past six months was 362,933, an increase of 17-percent over the first half of 2022. Kia closed the month of June with 70,495 total units, an 8-percent increase over the same period last year, marking the 11th straight month of year-over-year sales growth.

Eight Kia models posted year-over-year sales increases in the first half, including: Carnival (+74-percent); Seltos (+64-percent); Sportage (+37-percent); Soul (+26-percent); Forte (+20-percent); Telluride (+18-percent); Sorento (+10-percent) and Niro (+9-percent). In addition, sales of Kia’s electrified models increased by 40-percent and sales of Kia’s SUVs increased by 25-percent over the 1st 6 months of last year.

“Kia sales continue to accelerate as consumers respond very positively to Kia’s enhanced lineup of rugged and capable SUV’s, sporty sedans and innovative EVs,” said Eric Watson, vice president, sales operations, Kia America. “As production continues to improve on models that were in short supply during the pandemic, we are seeing sales strength across our core SUV models with Sportage, Telluride, Sorrento and Seltos as well as the Niro, Soul and Carnival models all seeing year-over-year growth. And with launch of our flagship EV9 all-electric 3-row SUV in the second half of the year, we expect to see continued momentum.”

  • MMNA Q2 Sales increase 12.5% year-over-year
  • Outlander tops sales results, posts best-ever quarterly sales; April represents second-best ever monthly result
  • Outlander Plug-in Hybrid posts best-ever quarterly sales; April represents third-best ever monthly result
Mitsubishi Motors North America (MMNA) today reported second quarter 2023 sales of 24,602, an increase of 12.5% over the same period in 2022. Stock levels of the brand's SUVs began to match consumer demand through the quarter, with Mirage availability expected to increase in the coming months.

Outlander and Outlander Plug-in Hybrid led the way in sales performance as both vehicles posted best-ever quarterly results, Outlander up 40% over the same period last year with 14,368 sales and Outlander Plug-in Hybrid up nearly 300% with 1,620 sales. Both vehicles posted increases on a year-to-date basis too, Outlander up 4% and Outlander Plug-in Hybrid up 186%. Also posting strong results as volume begins to build was Eclipse Cross, up 61% over Q2 2022 with 2,761 sales. This increased availability saw Eclipse Cross sales increasing month by month through the quarter.

MMNA's overall Q2 results represented the best sales performance since Q1 2022. Mitsubishi Motors Corporation continues to focus on increased production for the U.S. market, and increased availability of the brand's SUVs –though even greater supply would have driven larger sales numbers – drove this overall performance. As vehicles drop out of the subcompact car segment, demand for the affordable, efficient Mirage remains high, and the expectation is that availability will rebound in coming months.

Well, I see my brother was not alone when he got his new Kia Seltos in May.

https://www.kiamedia.com/us/en/media...ompany-history

To be honest, I'm surprised that Mitsubishi is still in the American market. They have allowed the number of their dealerships in the U.S. to dwindle down to almost nothing, just like Isuzu, Suzuki, Daewoo, and Daihatsu...but those companies all packed up and left, while Mitsubishi still stays and hangs on.

Maybe they are making a comeback after all. More power to them if they do.

A few years ago, I had a friend in Carson City, NV, near Lake Tahoe, which was interested in a new Outlander, as an inexpensive way to get a versatile crossover with AWD. The closest Mitsu shop, at the time, was some 90 miles away in California. (I did a dealer-search)

In my sprawling D.C. area, there are only two dealerships in all of the vast Maryland suburbs, and only one in the VA suburbs. (Manassas). The one in Manassas opened a couple of years ago...in a dungy old brick building that is also a used car shop and part of an industrial park. Years ago, there were 4 or 5 Mitsu shops in the VA suburbs...but that number dwindled down to zero for several years before the Manassas shop opened up.

And the company has not had a display at the D.C. Auto Show for years.

Mitsubishi is just budget Nissan nowadays, if anything Infiniti is the brand that I am surprised is still alive.

Good point. Can't really disagree with Infiniti...but Infiniti seems to have a few more dealerships in my area than Mitsubishi.

Impreza sales for June 2023 increased 39 percent, and Forester sales increased 34 percent compared to June 2022. Year to date, WRX posted a 148 percent increase, while the BRZ carline posted an increase of 51 percent compared to the same period in 2022.

"With a strong first half of 2023 in the rearview, we’re well-positioned to continue our sales growth and meet the demand for vehicles that speak to the lifestyles and needs of our customers,” said Troy Poston, Senior Vice President of Sales. “Our lineup offers something for the whole family, and we just announced competitive pricing on our model designed to accommodate families in safety and comfort – our three-row 2024 Subaru Ascent SUV, which hits the road this fall.”

What amazes me is what people are paying for cars now - over $1K a month payments are the norm, the number of $30K and under cars in the market is a fraction of what it was just 3 years ago. Sales look "good" based on these numbers, but the US will never get back to the 18+M unit sales a year from pre-COVID, the US middle class has basically been priced out of the new car market unless they are willing to take on staggering payment levels.
