TLDR: It's a GX 550 with the 2.4L iFORCE MAX powertrain from the Tacoma TRD Pro. Pricing starts in the mid-$50s. 3.5 grades... Land Cruiser 1958 (Base, round headlights), Land Cruiser and Land Cruiser Premium (rectangle headlights ala FJ62), Land Cruiser First Edition (5K units, every option, round headlights).

The media embargo lifts at 9:20 PM Eastern August 1, 2023, at which point you'll see all of the videos and articles go live worldwide. I'll make sure to add a watch link if Toyota puts one out, but the last few launch events were a little delayed in terms of posting live, so who knows.

Not much new to report, but Toyota today confirmed the Land Cruiser is returning to North America at 9:20 pm Eastern on August 1, 2023.

Return of the split tailgate?

 

Possible, but doubt it based on the video above. Most likely going to be a variation of the GX 550 liftgate, as you can see the same glass-open button.

Edited to add. Unless I misunderstood and you're referring to just the glass opening separately from the liftgate... which, yes, it will.

 

That glass button going to last with UV beat down? I question putting it there vs over the license plate

 

It appears to be downgraded in size and prestige from the previous offering. Or in other words, smaller (?) and marketed to a more off-road crowd (getting back to it's roots). A good move overall if the price drops accordingly, but I wonder if it's stepping on the 4Runner's toes. Same role there, so to speak.
So many SUV's by Toyota and Lexus. I'd hate to be the corporate person in charge of slicing all the pieces of the pie.

 

Curious how it compares to the GX. I'm on the waitlist for the GX, cannot wait until 2025.

 

Would be good if it’s less bloated and more akin to the original - simple and bulletproof.

That's a little too Tonka toy-ish for me just like the FJ Cruiser was. GX550 it is!

 

oh, so its quite literally the GX without the spindle.

 

If this is really it (official debut in a couple hours, right?), then I'm a bit surprised by how much it looks like the GX. I do like this, though!

 

Wish it had 3 wipers up front like the 2007 FJ!

Definitely think there may be some crowding with the 4Runner, all depending on pricing levels.
