but back definitely not a thing of beauty, and press reporting that too...

Judging by what people are saying online about the new Santa Fe, the "problem" is with how Hyundai designed the rear as the rest of the SUV has generally received positive feedback.

This angle giving me a lot of minibus vibe

Late to the party here, but first impression was impressive front and side. Rear is a bathtub with lights. I would personally skip it due to the rear styling.
As someone mentioned earlier, Hyundai is leading the way with major design changes every 3-4 years. Even their facelifts are consistently heavy and nowhere close to the level of change others offer. I find that to be a subtle weakness, as they don't have a solid design anchor that sticks and works like so many other brands. Not to mention the resale issue. But hey... every brand is entitled to finding the right recipe for year to year sales. If it works for the business in the longrun, so be it.
I'll end with saying this new unit will be more of a purchase statement rather than a rental car. A good thing.

My guess is it will grow on us. When it came out I thought the current Santa Fe was HIDEOUS. Like one of the ugliest vehicles I have ever seen. But now I like them.

me too. and I bought one before I came around on the styling...... It was just the best package for the money for my wife's car and she liked it.

I like both of these more than what they designed. I randomly saw those in the comments thread of a post on Twitter - someone else mocked it up and lots of people were commenting on how much better they both look compared to the lights at the bottom.

I never did warm up to the styling of the current Santa Fe it’s too soft and curvy. I usually find round curvy designs unattractive. I prefer boxy and sharper designs like the Tucson or the Palisade.

You would have probably loved the Ford Flex.

It was a fairly attractive car the Flex. Not really a type of vehicle I would own. But the styling was appealing to me.

I think the white / silver one looks fantastic from the side profile. Also the interior is clean.
