My YouTube feed has been showing me videos of guys in CA getting "State Reffed". I never heard of it until about a week ago. CA cops seem really strict on exhausts.

I gotta say…pass the exhaust laws. So obnoxious.

Some of the guys are stock. Just watched a guy in a stock M2 getting pulled over.

Not sure what CA cops do about Harley's. They're obviously very loud from the factory.

I'm certainly not going to defend everything California does, and I have never been a fan of the way the state is run. But, in all fairness, there is sometimes at least some reason to their madness. Once the soot and smoky air around the Pittsburgh region was cleaned up in the 1960s and 1970s from the steel mills, the Los Angeles region, with its notorious brown haze/smog inversion-layer, became what was arguably the most polluted region in the country....mostly from vehicle-traffic, not industry or mills. Even today, while much better than in the 1970s, smog still remains a problem in that region.

It's really funny because they will take the smallest gap past you and just end up slightly ahead, had that happen yesterday in traffic with an old accord and newer kia. As soon we got past the point of congestion I just left them 4 lights behind and got to enjoy watching them struggle to try and catch up.

They never did by the time I turned off for home lol!

If you have a loud exhaust you should have a valve system to switch from loud to silent depending on where you are IMO

As I recall, the Dodge Stealth/Mitsubishi 3000GT sports car of the 1990s had a button on the dash that (more or less) did that....varied the exhaust-tone.

Or something to quiet it down.

Was passed by a Honda the other day with a loud exhaust and when he let off the gas as he was passing it made a loud back fire pop.

That would definitely get some unwanted attention.

Yes, they are strict on cars with loud exhaust. Harleys do get a pass. A ref ticket is a PITA. People who get them have to prove the issue was corrected and the car basically stays on the radar forever making it difficult to register. Exhaust, big intercoolers, bigger turbos, and turbos on cars that didn’t come with them from the factory are common violations that get people ref tickets. My car doesn’t have any of those things and none of the cars before this one did either.

I have a TRD header on my 4AG-E that is on an engine stand and not in the car. I bought it because it was the only one in the country and the Toyota dealer in Long Beach had it. It is not CARB certified which means smog certificates would always be a problem. I am just putting the factory manifold on and run that to avoid the hassle.

Pretty sure they have them, at least here. I still hear terrible loud exhausts though.

I have no issue with a Mustang GT aftermarket exhaust. They sound great. 4 cylinders all sound like crap.

I like being at a red light and a Vette or CTS-V has that lopey cam choppin.

Loud exhausts from cars like those are pretty loud but I honestly enjoy them sometimes, since we can barely get V8s anymore.

because nobody with one of those cars even remotely cares about cars or driving, and probably never uses words like 'efficiency' or 'optimized'
