I pulled it up, yeah they are the same engine:

Basically they took the 1MZ, increased the bore, changed the throttle body to try and improve the throttle lag issue and replaced the kock sensor so it would run better on regular fuel.

The two engines even look identical:

1MZ:

I see that argument you are making, but I see them as different engines under the same family of engines.

Thats tecnically what they are according to Toyota, but 98% of the engine is exactly the same.

I'm seeing a bunch of new videos about the V35A-FTS and main bearing/spun bearing issues happening in 2024 Tundras, LX 600's etc. Will be interesting to see if GX 550's have this same issue.

They made many electrical differences too but that's just bolt in stuff

Y'all don't quote me but when comparing the wiring and reading thru the Toyota tech docs, if I remember the 1mz has a 16 bit processor in the engine ECU and the later 3mz has a more modern 32 bit processor.

That's in comparing the RX300 to the RX330.

This engine is a whole nother animal than what Toyota owners have dealt with in the past lol

Yep, the ECU was replaced also.

ok. So 98% the same. Not the same as the engine code and displacement is still different. Different engines from the same family of engine?

It’s all semantics. If 98% of the engine is the same, to me it’s just a revision of the same engine.

For instance in MB world it would not have had a different engine classification. They all would have the same code.

It’s like a car model. When they do a refresh it doesn’t become a “different car in the same family” it’s largely the same car with some revisions and improvements.

I'd love to read more comments if you have that source. My guess is the GX550 will probably be the same as it's the same engine just detuned.

This engine will last that long no problem, it’s just got way more potential for needs

I would hope it could make it to 137k... But honestly I'd start to be worried at that point..

I don’t agree. The 3.3 has a different compression ratio, plastic intake parts. Same engine family but still different engines. I just don’t view it the way you see it.

‘’what does Mercedes do?

It’s an improvement of the same engine. Mercedes for instance considers both the engine in the 560 and the 580 the same engine despite all of the improvements for 48v etc. Both are considered M176. Same was true of the previous V8, there were big changes over the years, different block types and such but that engine was always considered the M278.
