BMW is just guilty for misleading the public. If not worse. Yeah there were M1 cars at the beginning, but BMW did brand M cars such as the M535i or M635Ci back in the 1970/80s…BMW has now gone back to the marketing, but it’s just a lie that they are real M cars today.

Lie or real?

you wrote: "It's a 4 cyl joke of a car" about the entry amg cars as if 4 cyl automatically makes it a joke. my point was a well regarded auto reviewer bought a golf r after considering loads of cars and reviewing countless others.

huge issue for you and those stuck in the past. and as more and more serious performers become electric, even less and less relevant.

damning with faint praise i see while assigning to an aspirational car only for poor people. nice job.

you're all about 'class'.
The golf has always been true to form with a turbo 4 as the performance option so it's exactly what you would expect.

AMG was never that.

Electric cars are pitifully slow vs ICE cars on any competitive level and are totally dead on arrival in any street race event. They simply have no chance against cars with 200-1000 more hp and half the weight, they are fine for what they are but have no headroom and will never be the same level.

An M340i has more potential than any EV, any of the German 4.0 cars are faster without even doing an internals build as well. My 4.0 A8 on E40 does a 9.6 1/4 mile for under $40k total invested lol!

Yes I am indeed all about judging cars based on their class, that's the whole point of comparing stuff. I'm not going to judge a small 2 door on its ability to tow etc....the small hot car class includes the RS3 and it's the king of the class. I don't compare based on price unless we are actually factoring that in so I couldn't care less about a golf when I could buy so many other superior options for that size of vehicle.

Oh it shouldn't be. They were riding on the internal stops and really risking damage and they effectively don't have a suspension system in that state.

The car he has is 40i without M package. You must be thinking about about 40i M Sports. Even though they are very similar, M Sports comes with M suspension and bigger brake. So technically it's a bit different. The car he wanted to have is X5 M50i. It's a different engine. This M50i is significantly different from 40i (4.3s vs. 5.2s). And there's also X5M version. Both 50i and X5M are way different from 40i. So they do mean something.

I respect your opinion, but have you driven any of them to make this general statement?

but at least these engines were in a proper chassis and not a FWD little hatchback with cheap economy roots

I used to own a diluted M car (M240i) and it was a nice balance of performance and luxury. I test drove an M2 before that and found it was way too harsh for the city roads I'd be driving on. The DCT was quick when WOT but I found it annoying for DD.

I have driven many BMW cars over the years. But one does not need to drive any BMW ever to know that BMW is using the M brand in a way that misleads the buyer. There is a real M car and a fake M car… the issue is that BMW is using the M badge in ways that devalue the M branding. A genuine real M car has a VIN that starts with WBS. (Perhaps BMW has changed this but I doubt it)

this is a real M car.

this is a real M car

Real or fake?

again, very easy to tell:

M + single digit = M car (M3)
M + multiple digits = not M car (M340)

A35 and A45 is no different and impossible to make a distinction since the 2 digits constantly change as engines change over the years

most people would have no clue that BMW is lying to them.

i'm saying BMW has been more consistent in its designation for what is and what isn't a full M car

however in the case of the C-class for instance, there's been a 32, 36, 43, 55, and 63, and up until 2017 every single one of those was a "real" AMG with a unique engine that couldn't be found in any non-AMG model

the 1999 C43 has an actual AMG engine, but the 2019 C43 doesn't... yet they're both identically named C43 and equally presented as "an AMG"

Is this BMW's fault or the fault of someone who buys or leases one without doing any research?

so the C 43 AMG is using an engine from a regular C class. Is my understanding correct?
