The current X3 is the same size as the X5 used to be. It's pretty much that way with other brands too these days.
You're not wrong. Current X3's front is actually slightly more than X5's while X5's rear is slightly more than X3's. GLE and GLS have identical front while GLE's rear is slightly less but still very comfortable. There's also another brand whose midsize is actually more spacious than its "full size" SUV.

Yeah, it seems like BMW tried this last year and there was so much backlash they abandoned it and no other automaker has tried it. I can’t imagine how anyone would put up with this, wouldn’t people just jailbreak their cars and program these features to work?
The 5 Series growth is pretty artificial, most of it comes from the elongated front overhang (why) and higher roofline thanks to the battery. The actual wheelbase isn't much longer than the previous model.

But the wheelbase, like the rest of the dimensions, IS longer than the E65 7-series, which was the point of the comparison being made.
