definitely can't agree here... epics like the original M3, 190E cosworth, S2000, mitsubishi EVO, WRX STI, and the AE86 corolla all have fabulous sounding 4 cylinders
See "vast majority of cases", which certainly aren't the ones you just listed. Your average econocar/basic family vehicle has a far better sounding I4 with better refinement than what used to be offered before, with more power to boot.

oh well every car i listed has worse NVH than any car now lol but modern engines basically all sound boring
Back to the spare tire thing for a sec. My former '94 GS300 had a full size spare, but on a basic steel wheel, so I would not have rotated that in. I went to aftermarket wheels not long after I bought that car and I certainly did not have any dezire to buy a 5th forged 3 piece wheel to have as a spare. Plus, the sets were all staggered, but that's been covered already.
and don't forget much of that just comes down to the transmission, once you get moving the newer car will start to lose the gearing advantage
but yes once you get used to the effortless wafty V8 which has no trouble at ANY speed and rpm, the boosted 4 cyl feels labored and unrefined before the turbo wakes up... and once it does there's only like 1000 rpm of "the fun part" before the torque delivery becomes monotonous and dreary sounds fill the cabin lol
Lol yep. That 500 seems just a teeeeeny bit slow, I feel like mine gets out of the hole much quicker. In any case, listen to them both lol.
It's not about being the fastest, it's just basking and enjoying a really high end MB V8.
Here's where it makes no sense----SL43 the torque peak is in the mid 3000RPM range, and that's including their "electric F1" bullshyttt. Yet they're saying the thing doesn't have torque. If it's a 2.0t it should have some shove down low at least, I've driven vehicles like that before. But they're saying you have to wind it out.. 4 cylinder.... Eeek.
The 2.0-liter four-cylinder's trick may be its electric turbocharger, but it still needs a lot of revs to keep it in the meaty zone of its torque curve. Peak power—375 hp—arrives at 6750 rpm. Torque peaks at 354 lb-ft between 3250 and 5000 rpm. This is an engine that wants you to work for it.
Lol, you can drive the M113 under 2000 RPM all day long. V8 feel and sound. Bad gas mileage, wahhhhhhhhh.

Looks to me like the engine has a low compression ratio to allow more boost at the high end, basically sacrificing some low-end to achieve higher peak number high in the curve.

i did see the traction control light flash for a sec there so maybe that's why
although i will say if peak torque on that car (SL43) is 3000 rpm that must be a big turbo! from a tuner perspective that actually gets me a bit excited about this engine, seems like there's a lot of latent potential to be unlocked... also it's RWD only which is nice to see in this day and age
to me at least the way to have the most fun with a turbo car is: use manual shifting to keep the engine just out of the boost, floor it, then wait for that moment when the turbo spools and suddenly everything starts happening at once... even better if you have a boost gauge to watch slowly creep up before all hell breaks loose!
I think they're worse, not better, most cars anyway. Cars weren't all rolling garbage piles of CAFE regulations back then.
Yeah, no. Mainstream cars today are way fancier inside than they were back then, and mainstream cars are also a lot more refined and luxurious feeling than they were then.
An example, an early 2000s Accord:
A current Accord:
So yeah a 90s/early 2000s Lexus interior looks boring and plain compared to the new Accord, but not the old Accord.

A 90s Accord with the 200 hp V6 was incredibly refined. Now in 2024 204hp comes from a garbage hybrid engine.
You also put a pic of an Accord DX (lol) versus the fully loaded new one. I don't think everything has advanced for the better, but some things... sure.
Look how nice the 1997 Maxima was. I owned this car this interior, it was just about as nice as a Lexus inside, easily. The quality of this car was astounding. Mine was an SE but the GLEs had some of the best fake wood I've seen. It was even nicer than this in the luxury oriented spec.
Meh.. I think the ES 300 looks better than the new accord too. The new Accord interior is only available in two colors! Gray and Black. It’s pretty bland.

I knew a guy that had one of those Accords and rode in it a lot, nothing refined about it and the new one blows it away in every way.

Just add leather lol

Better.
Compared to a modern Maxima, which is an old design, no contest

My ES was only available with three interior colors, gray, black and tan...
The point was to show the difference between it and the old Accord, not to compare the Accord to the ES.
