For some reason Steve posting about his auto shop issues made me think of this commercial

I'm getting all kinds of app, notifications about it being started and driven and locked and unlocked, so its alive!
People are not good at driving. I reserved a Turo rental and it was a 2021 Honda Accord. The owner messaged me and had to cancel because his Memorial Day weekend renter folded it up. I am now stuck with Hertz but at least, ideally, they have more than one car in the midsize category. BTW, A Corolla (or similar) is now a midsize car. LOL.

Yeah I've never really looked at Turo for a car I "need" for a trip, so I've never actually thought about this particular concern. It's always been something fun like a 981 GTS, C7 Z06, or R35 GT-R to rip for a day.

The life hack for renting cars is to rent a full size pickup truck
Then grease the guy who goes and gets it.
We paid less than a midsize car for a $70,000 F-150 King Ranch.
Turo is sketchy I was gonna use it but decided to just rent the regular way.

Well my stupid self never bothered checking under the positive terminal cover on my truck for a bit too long. Clamp was so corroded that it broke when I installed a new battery yesterday. Time to cut it off and crimp a better one on when I can get the motivation to do it. Driving the 540i in the meantime.

Got it back, runs great. Service advisor said the tech put about 45 miles on it and everything seems good. I tested it all up through the rev ranges and at idle etc and it feels the same to me.
So apparently instead of lowering the engine what they did was tear down the front end of the car and go in from the front...the additional parts were both oil separators which were clogged with oil. Here is the breakdown of parts and the procedure they used for the repair:
I have a lot of driving to do tomorrow, so it will get a good trial run to make sure everything is feeling and working right. I do have to say, as big a proponent as I am about independent mechanics, I do feel a sense of security having had a repair this extensive done at the dealer.
Also, yeah no GLS for me lol. This car rides and drives on such another level.
Check out what was on the end of the drive waiting to be returned to a customer:

That's fantastic to hear you got your car back and all appears well, super cool car they had there as well!
I got word about an hour back that my intake cleaning was done on mine, it's an extremely strange feeling having someone else work on it but nice to have it done.

They must have awesome references cuz I can't see you letting anyone touch that car and put fingers in the engine. Lol

So strange to have gotten updates on my car, it's my mentor doing the work since he owed me but still. He is also the only person I trust to touch it other than me
Possibly the world's most expensive intake gasket set....$35 each
Factory sparks
Stupid expensive seals ready to go
104k miles worth of carbon, not enough to choke it out like lesser engines but you could feel it start before. Quite funny since it was still smoother than anything else I've ever been around/owned
After first pass, he went back and soaked all 24 valves and did a final blast but you get the idea from this
After the cleaning he says you literally can't tell the engine starts anymore or any change at all when revved. Passed the coin test 4/4 times cold for him as well

and glad yours is back and running well! yea a GLS/GLE can give the impression of having a "near S-class" level ride during casual use but the moment some actual serious driving is done it quickly becomes very clear that the depth of engineering isn't the same degree... i value high speed stability too much to ever think about replacing a sedan with an SUV, i could only supplement a sedan with an SUV lol

He is the one responsible for the first ever Audi 4.2 FSI engine chain replacement and the factory engineers flew out here and he wrote the TSB/factory procedure with them and they used his pictures from the process. If he had any problem is that he is obsessive to a fault and simply will never not solve something ever. We are talking a job that no one else can solve type deal where he just will not let a car beat him even if he isn't charging the customer enough for it.
I've seen him do enough "impossible" fixes and diag that I trust him, he also will do exactly what you request for something like my car
