KIA AMERICA REPORTS ALL-TIME BEST ANNUAL SALES

  • Total U.S. volume of 782,451 vehicles shatters Kia’s previous yearly sales record set in 2021 by 12-percent
  • 6 models achieve all-time high sales, contributing to seven consecutive years of growth in retail sales excluding fleet transactions
  • SUV and utility lineup record a 16-percent growth in sales, accounting for 72-percent of sales total
  • Electrified lineup grows 41-percent in sales
IRVINE, Calif., January 3, 2024 – December sales of 60,275 units capped the best-ever 4th quarter for fast-growing Kia America and wrapped the greatest annual performance in company history. Kia’s 2023 total of 782,451 units was up 13-percent year-over-year and 12-percent over the previous record set in 2021. In addition, the brand set an all-time record with 725,817 units sold through Kia dealers nationwide.

"Kia is clearly a brand on the move. Our rugged SUVs and innovative EVs are our greatest strength, and demand across the Kia lineup reached all-time highs in 2023,” said Seungkyu (Sean) Yoon, president and CEO, Kia North America and Kia America. “Groundbreaking vehicles like our new flagship EV9 EV 3-row SUV showcase Kia’s unique ability to elevate expectations and push boundaries, and we intend to accelerate our growth trajectory in 2024 with a combination of 6 all-new and significantly redesigned products scheduled to arrive in showrooms.”

6 Kia models set all-time annual sales records in 2023, including: Carnival (+93-percent); Niro (+26-percent); Seltos (+17-percent); Sportage (+12-percent); Telluride (+11-percent); and Forte (+7-percent). Sales of Kia’s electrified models increased 41-percent and SUV sales increased 16-percent over the segments’ previous records. Overall, Kia’s rugged and capable SUVs accounted for 72-percent of 2023’s annual sales total.

In addition to the monthly sales performance, Kia America announced several initiatives, including:
  • Orlando’s premier downtown sports and entertainment destination – and home of the National Basketball Association’s Orlando Magic – was renamed the Kia Center. The partnership includes new indoor and outdoor signage, the installation of EV charging stations, Kia vehicle displays and the Kia Terrace, a hospitality lounge for the enjoyment of automotive enthusiasts and sports and music fans.
  • The all-electric 2024 Kia EV9 named among Popular Science’s “2023 Best of What’s New” awards. The publication’s editorial team recognized the 3-row EV9 SUV for its inventive use of interior materials, noting “Kia’s new EV9 may be an impressive-looking electric vehicle, but what’s inside may be even more important.” This is the first year that a Kia vehicle has been named to Popular Science’s annual rankings of the year’s “Greatest Innovations.”
  • The all-new 2024 Kia EV9 three-row EV SUV and the rugged-yet-sophisticated 2024 Telluride named to Car and Driver’s 2024 10 Best Trucks and SUVs. In earning this prestigious award for the 5th consecutive year, the Telluride has become a paragon of 3-row SUV excellence and 1 of a few vehicles to be named a Car and Driver 10Best each year it has been on sale. The Telluride’s ongoing success has paved the way for its all-electric counterpart, the EV9, which celebrates this award in its 1st year on sale.
  • The all-new 2024 Kia EV9 and the acclaimed 2024 Telluride named to the 2024 Kelley Blue Book Best Buy Awards list. While the EV9 was recognized as the “Best 3-Row Electric Vehicle” in its first year on sale, the Telluride continued its winning legacy by marking its 5th consecutive year as a category winner, taking the crown in the “Best Midsize SUV” segment for 2024.
  • The Kia Telluride named a segment winner by the J.D. Power 2024 U.S. ALG Residual Value Awards within the “Midsize SUVs with 3-Row Seating” category, based on analysis of used-vehicle performance, brand outlook and product competitiveness and marking the 3rd consecutive year Telluride has claimed the coveted accolade -- adding to the long list of awards Kia’s hot-selling SUV has garnered.
  • The 2024 Kia Sportage was awarded the Insurance Institute of Highway Safety (IIHS) 2023 Top Safety Pick+ (TSP+) rating.
  • 3 Kia vehicles included among the 2024 Consumer Guide Automotive Best Buy awards including the EV6, Telluride and Soul models. This marks the 10th consecutive year that Soul was honored in the subcompact crossover category and the 2nd consecutive year the all-electric EV6 was recognized in the compact crossover category. Telluride was named a 2024 Best Buy in the midsize crossover category after having 1st appeared on the list in 2021.

SUBARU OF AMERICA 2023 YEAR-END SALES UP 13.6 PERCENT

  • December sales up 1.8 percent
  • Full year of monthly sales increases and 17 consecutive months of sales growth
  • Crosstrek achieves best December and best year ever
Subaru of America, Inc. (SOA) today reported 17 consecutive months of increased sales with 57,764 vehicles sold for December 2023, a 1.8 percent increase compared with December 2022 (56,760). Subaru ended calendar year 2023 with 632,086 vehicle sales, a 13.6 percent increase compared with calendar year 2022.

“Subaru and our retailers worked hard in 2023 to exceed customer expectations and achieve a full year of consecutive sales increases,” said Jeff Walters, President and Chief Operating Officer of Subaru of America, Inc. “We were also able to donate millions of dollars to charities that make a meaningful impact in communities across the country. We recognize how the spirit of the Subaru Love Promise brings together our customers, retailers, distributor partners, and colleagues across the country to make the world a better place.”

For calendar year 2023, Outback was the top performer by volume with 161,814 vehicle sales (+10 percent). Crosstrek, a close second by volume, achieved its best year ever with 159,193 vehicle sales (+3 percent) and had its best December ever. Forester added 152,566 annual sales (+34 percent) in 2023. On the performance side, the automaker’s WRX model achieved annual sales of 24,681 (+32 percent), and the BRZ sports car added 4,188 sales (+25 percent) in 2023. The Solterra EV completed its first full year on sale with 8,872 vehicle sales.

“We closed 2023 on a high note, capping off a year of steady sales gains as the Subaru family saw significant growth last year,” said Troy Poston, Senior Vice President of Sales. “As we kick off 2024, we have great expectations of welcoming even more new customers, and are eager to have them share their adventures with the largest range of vehicles available in Subaru’s history.”

December sales were supported by the annual Subaru Share the Love® Event where the automaker donates $250 for every new Subaru vehicle purchased or leased to the customer’s choice of the following national charities; The American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals® (ASPCA®), Make-A-Wish®, Meals on Wheels America, or the National Park Foundation, as well as more than 800 local charities. Retailers could also select up to two hometown charities in their local communities to receive at least an additional $50 for each vehicle sold or leased. In the program’s 16th consecutive year, Subaru and its retailers aimed to achieve the philanthropic milestone of over $285 million in cumulative donations since the Subaru Share the Love Event started in 2008. Final 2023 Share the Love Event donation results are expected in March.

Ford 2023 sales totaled 1,995,912 vehicles – up 7.1 percent over 2022 and the best since 2020.

Ford America’s Truck Leader

For the 47th year in a row, Ford F-Series was America’s best-selling truck and America’s best-selling vehicle for the 42nd year in a row. It’s a streak that spans 4 generations and has lasted longer than the entire lifespan of many other popular consumer products. In addition, the Ford F-150 Lightning was the No. 1 selling electric truck and the F-150 Hybrid the No. 1 selling full-size hybrid truck for 2023. In total, 750,789 customers chose a new Ford F-Series truck in 2023.

Ford again was the No. 1 selling truck manufacturer for Q4 and for full year 2023, providing customers what they want with electric, hybrid or gas-powered trucks. Ford sold 1,081,777 trucks and vans in 2023 – up 13 percent and outselling the second place’s total pickup and van sales by more than 65,000 for the year.

“Ford has the vehicle a customer wants – that has been key to our success in 2023, with our continued dominance in trucks and SUVs. We saw strong gains coming from gas-powered vehicles and record setting sales for our hybrid and electric vehicles,” said Andrew Frick, president, Ford Blue. “Customers know they get choice when they come to Ford. None of our competitors offer the powertrain choices that Ford has become known for in trucks. And it will continue with the launch of the new F-150 later this month.”

Ford F-Series expanded its lead in 2023, on sales of 750,789 – up 15 percent over the previous year and outselling second place Silverado by about 200,000 trucks. Gas- and diesel-powered F-Series sales were up 12 percent, while top selling F-150 Lightning and F-150 Hybrid achieved record sales for the year – up 55 and 41 percent, respectively.

Ford and Lincoln SUVs posted strong sales in 2023 – Bronco Family (up 8 percent), Edge (up 24 percent) and Expedition (up 18 percent). For the year, Lincoln Navigator sales expanded 33 percent on sales of 17,549. Lincoln SUVs closed the quarter up 9 percent on the strength of Aviator (up 11 percent) and Nautilus (up 42 percent).

Ford Pro Commercial Sales Success

The Ford Transit van was America’s No. 1 selling commercial van. Ford’s commercial vans have been a source of strength through the entire year marking 45 straight years of commercial van leadership, with sales up 21 percent in 2023 on sales of 190,016 vans. Transit van sales climbed 30 percent on sales of 129,009 for the year. Ford E-Series vans increased 34 percent this year on sales of 42,957 cutaway vans.

Fast Start for All-New Mustang

Ford’s all-new 2024 Mustang initiated sales in August. Strong momentum continued into Q4 with total sales of 13,290 – up 21 percent.

Record EV Sales

For the year, Ford’s EV sales were up across the board, with F-150 Lightning, Mustang Mach-E and E-Transit all up 55, 3 and 18 percent, respectively. Ford was America’s No. 2 EV brand in 2023.

Commercial Vehicle Leadership

Ford was No. 1 in commercial vehicles based on the most recent registration data through October. Commercial truck and van share grew to 40 percent, up 0.9 percentage points from the same period a year ago in class 1 -7.

  • Outlander and Outlander Plug-in Hybrid both post all-time annual sales records
  • Total annual sales up year-over-year
  • Number-one rankings in JD Power CSI and Reputation Customer Experience studies top the list of accolades received in 2023, driving strong annual sales performance
  • New Mitsubishi Motors Confidence integrated customer-care program launched in 2023
  • New brand marketing campaign featuring Rashida Jones as the company's first brand-level celebrity spokesperson debuted in December
Mitsubishi Motors North America, Inc. (MMNA) maintained momentum through the year and accelerated into 2024, today reporting fourth-quarter 2023 sales of 19,604 and full-year sales of 87,340. In a year when vehicle availability continued to be a challenge, MMNA ended 2023 up 1.8% over 2022. The sales performance capped a year in which MMNA and its dealer partners ranked number-one among mass market brands in the annual JD Power Customer Service Index (CSI) survey and took top honors in Reputation's Customer Experience rankings as part of their 2023 Automotive Report.

Flagship models Outlander and Outlander Plug-in Hybrid continued to lead sales for the brand annually, with 42,501 gasoline Outlander sales representing an annual increase of 3.8%, as well as an all-time sales-record, the best year since the nameplate launched in 2002. Just 1 year since launch, the all-new Outlander Plug-in Hybrid also shone over the past 12 months, riding the wave of consumer interest in plug-in hybrids, with sales of 6,681 representing an increase of 240.7% over the previous year. Like Outlander, this performance represents the all-time best full-year sales number since the nameplate's U.S. introduction in 2017.

Highlighting Q3 2023, Mirage and Mirage G4 quarterly sales collectively rose 26.9%, as consumer interest in the subcompact hatch and sedan continued to show strength. Driving the December Mirage sales performance over the same period in 2022 was an increase in vehicle availability that grew throughout the quarter.

News and Notes
  • MMNA's commitment to world-class customer experience resulted in two wins for the brand and its dealer partners in 2023. For the first time in its more than 40-year history in the U.S., Mitsubishi Motors ranked first among 19 mass-market auto brands in Reputation's annual 2023 Automotive Reputation Report. And in March, Mitsubishi Motors ranked 1st among mass-market brands in the 2023 JD Power Customer Service Index (CSI) survey.
  • MMNA launched Mitsubishi Motors Confidence, the brand's integrated customer-care program through a new brand-marketing campaign starring Rashida Jones, MMNA's first-ever brand-level celebrity spokesperson.
  • Accolades for the company's vehicles continued with Outlander Plug-in Hybrid being named 2023 "Latin Flavor" SUV of the Year by Puros Autos, "Outdoor Activity Vehicle of the Year" by the Northwest Auto Press association, and for the second consecutive year, "Family Green Car of the Year" by Green Car Journal.
  • The new 2024 Mitsubishi Outlander joined the Outlander Plug-in Hybrid (models built after May 2023) as a 2023 calendar-year Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) TOP SAFETY PICK (TSP) winner.
  • During 2023, MMNA announced the completion of its 100th Visual Identity new-design dealership facility. More than 90% of the company's dealer partners nationwide have now either committed to the program or completed renovations.
  • MMNA added Xtime, *** Automotive's leading service appointment scheduling solution, to the company's MiCAR customer-service program to further streamline customers' service-scheduling experience.
  • As part of the Mitsubishi Motors Confidence customer care program, every 2024 Mitsubishi Motors vehicle sold in America includes 2 years of limited maintenance.1

despite all the naysaying about GM and Mary Barra, etc., GM killed it in 2023.

GM sold a total of 2,577,662 light vehicles in the U.S. throughout the 2023 calendar year. This represents a 14.1% increase over 2022 and is the company’s best result since 2019 when it sold 2.9 million vehicles. Chevrolet remained GM’s best-selling brand, shifting 1,699,244 vehicles, a 13.1% increase over 2022 while GMC accounted for 563,677 sales, an 8.9% jump. Interestingly, it was Buick that experienced the most significant jump in sales with 167,030 units arriving in the homes of shoppers, a 61.4% rise from 2022. Sales of GM’s all-electric vehicles totaled 75,883 units, or 2.9% of its total volume.
