True but the 10 year old German is gonna cost 1/3 as much to buy with 1/2 the miles and have more options and drive better. Totally worth it if you have any semblance of ability to work on stuff or a good shop to work on it. My LS430 and 460 have been FAR more costly than my A8s all while being more simple etc and all those excuses people make to justify driving cars that are 10 years behind their rivals.

Same thing with the VWs I've had, the SUV was so cheap to buy it still easily beat all 3 RXs we had for overall cost to own and is such a better car it's funny almost. Story repeats with the TDI vs a Prius. It's a skill/care issue if you can't own a foreign car or you just like paying more for the Toyota badge and accompanying reliability that used to have back in the 90s and early 2000s. Some of the highest paying jobs I have are from Toyota owners who throw the wallet at me to fix issues that those car just have happen no matter what you do like the timing cover leak on the GR engines.

Are the happy owners from new models, old ones, or both? I have no doubt the owners of older models were satisfied because they came to the brand for luxury and reliability and got both. Things seem to have changed with the newer ones.

I think you and I have a very different perspective because we are not held hostage by a repair shop*. I completely agree that Toyota is years behind in technology their conservative approach has served them very well. But now people demand the latest tech and competitive performance remains to be seen if Toyota can maintain high reliability with their boosted small displacement engines. I predict long term reliability will suffer.

*let's be honest most repair shops are horrible

I have a number of friends who own or owned 3rd gen Tacomas, all of which spent more time in the mechanic's bay than my 2015 F-150 has, and it's not even close.

Toyota's reliability isn't what it was 15-30 years ago. Is it still better than many others? Yes. Can you assume you'll never have an issue? Not anymore.

Toyota/Lexus reliability will vary, like all manufacturers. I'm pretty lucky so far. My 2006 Scion tC was a wreck, speaking of reliability. But after that, it's been good. The last time I had a warranty repair on a Toyota was my 2011 Tacoma, for a squeaky clutch pedal. My parents have a 16 Tacoma (well, now my neighbor owns it as he bought it from them) and a 19 RAV4, no warranty repairs on either. My 2020 Tacoma was perfect, with no warranty repairs, and my Tundra has been the same. Our RX350 (2013) didn't have any warranty claims, and nor did either of our Highlanders (previous 2016 and our current 2019). My IS (2014), and all three of my GS's (2015, 2019, 2020) have all been flawless. My sister's RAV4 (2020) was problematic enough that she ditched it. Guess I have been lucky, as have my parents.

Agree with your point about Toyota, but I think this goes for pretty much everyone now.

These high tech downsized engines just aren't gonna last like the NA ones.

People had best get their oil changed by 5002 miles. And nobody's gonna do this because most people don't, and we're gonna see the results. The days of just bulletproof motors are over, thanks to regulations and fuel economy bs. I think I took my LS430 3000 miles over once? After it was well over 10 years old and 6 figure mileage..... Those days are over. And lol I'd take my 155k UZ and wager it will still last longer than a comparable turbo motor even as old as it is.

I would have no issue with the new drivetrains from Lexus/Toyota. They don't concern me in the least.

I'm sure, I'm not really a hybrid person but Toyota seems to have a knack for it.

I'm not saying all engines are just pure garbage but there are just all these answers to questions nobody asked (nor ever would) and it produces mixed results at best, IMO.

New, no. Used, yes. I would never buy an LX at my current mileage with the 3.4tt. It's got 135k.

You don't have many miles though if I remember correctly?

My Sequoia has more cumulative issues (bought it new) than my dad Range Rover and that's with me over maintaining it. Still decided to leak oil at the timing cover and develop a trans cooler coolant leak. Warped the factory brakes twice under warranty and warped a okay set of aftermarket ones with moderate use. Shocks are leaking up front now and I have the freaking active ones so that's gonna cost as much as the air shocks on one of the A8s. Oh and my damn ACC always loses calibration and if I didn't have ability to reaim it myself it would have cost 1000s so far

I swear to god if get oil ring issues I will spaz. I have had SO MANY newer Toyotas come in drinking oil it's really put my off owning any of the 4 cyls from them.

Meanwhile in German land I'm just waiting for something to explode so I can say "there it is!" Lol!
