Agree with your point about Toyota, but I think this goes for pretty much everyone now.
These high tech downsized engines just aren't gonna last like the NA ones.
People had best get their oil changed by 5002 miles. And nobody's gonna do this because most people don't, and we're gonna see the results. The days of just bulletproof motors are over, thanks to regulations and fuel economy bs. I think I took my LS430 3000 miles over once? After it was well over 10 years old and 6 figure mileage..... Those days are over. And lol I'd take my 155k UZ and wager it will still last longer than a comparable turbo motor even as old as it is.

Never had that occur before and the car had me wanting to shoot it after that. 3 times it failed on my and the 2nd engine was "low" mile for the damn oil leaks. Stupid thing required so much work to be in spec and like it should be it was dumb. Great car but my god for that amount of work it didn't drive well at all.

Not on my current cars, no, but that's a more recent development (since COVID). I've owned a lot of cars with over 100k in miles. My 4Runner, with the 4.7 V8, was incredible. My Tundra, while at only 15k miles, has had a hard life, with several thousand of those miles pulling our travel trailer. No issues. The only car I've really had issues was that Scion. I traded it in with about 30k miles on it. Traded it in with the check engine light aglow (thermostat stuck). Our Acura TSX wasn't great either. We did put well over 100k miles on it, but it was plagued by rattles, alternator issues, door lock actuators, etc. Lots of nagging issues, though it was a very pleasing car to own otherwise. My Chevrolet Silverado was my worst car. Don't get me started on that one.

My first UZ blew up, my 2nd lost the cam seals and required cams out and dealer only sealers....then the VVT actuator O-rings failed and I learned that that is a thing that happens!

You must have gotten an LS430 that someone neglected in just the worst way possible.

Yeah, that's really, really crazy. LS430s are just bricks usually, especially those engines. I would posit my 155k V8 as it is right now would still outlast the brand new 3.4tt in the current ones.

Cars in general have improved reliability wise.
I think the current gen of cars with the HUGE digital screens, lack of physical controls, small turbo / hybrid engines will age terribly.
BMW has improved quite a bit in last 5 years. The inline 6 motors have always been solid but the 4cyl turbo and V8 have held up as well. The ZF 8speed is bulletproof.
Don’t worry though the IDRIVE 8 that comes with the huge ipad screens is causing major headaches and issues so im sure Lexus will be back at #1 soon.

I'm glad I locked in my 2017. Got the B58/ZF8 combo, iDrive 6 which works fantastic, auto-start stop can remain off persistently(though it's not even seeming to operate right now anyway, lol), physical controls, a traditional gauge cluster, etc.

You bought the peak era IMO, I like that range of BMWs the best and are the only ones I would/did consider owning. I would have gotten an S63 or V12 though so ultimately I backed out of fear (have done too many valve seals on the V8s) and because the 7 doesn't ride as well nor comes as well equipped/fit as tightly as the other stuff I was looking at.

Yeah I checked into your BMW, just about perfect. Plenty modern but you still got a good, un-ruined engine!

And transmission! The ZF8 is probably going to be the best converter transmission ever made, only thing I have ever driven that is better is a PDK once you are already moving more than 15 mph

I have the same combination in my 2018 X3, it's brilliant, though I had to purchase Bimmercode to code off the darn Auto-Start Stop feature.

My 2018 M3 has just enough tech with Idrive 6 but still old school due to analog gauges, no active safety non sense, manual hand brake, physical buttons and CD player!
In 20 years, I think it will age much better than the new M3s with the ipad screen and awful pig nose grill.

Now I have to put it in Sport Individual mode and that prevents the engine from the start/stop nonsense.
