Long Live the Lexus 5.0 V8

Yep. I know! I have to remind myself sometimes I never thought I'd actually get a Lexus with this engine unless it was a used car. The GS F was still pretty expensive on the used market at the time, and it seemed like all the RC F's in my budget were sketchy. When they announced the IS 500, I was like, "Now this is what I need." It has the same powertrain but less aggro suspension and brakes, and thus, it is at a lower price. So the fact that I could get a four-door new with a new-car warranty and still get what I want was a lot easier for my wife to go along with. She had concerns with the RC F about going to a two-door. Though we're still child-free at this point, so it's not totally out of the question.

I disagree. The LC has soul and you can tell Lexus put their hearts into designing, engineering and building it. The V8 just adds to the car and brings it to the next level. Badge and power snobs will scoff at it, but its their lost. The Germans in comparison just feels like a computer with disco lights. They throw everything in there and say look what we have and can do.

I wouldn't. And neither would 99.5% of owners of these. Hear this?

Low nvh levels are what I want in all of my cars. Not some lawnmower drone in the passenger seat drowning out the interior ambience. The only noise I want to hear is my mark Levinson.

Right, and that is why I get so frustrated sometimes on social media. I can't post more than a couple Instagram reels about my IS 500 without someone chiming in that it's slow. OK, wait a minute. Is 472 horsepower... slow now? And also, the IS 500 is severely tire-limited. That's a big reason why Lexus quotes the RC F as having a significantly better 0-60 - the tires. Besides, it is all top-end. Sure, as a 5.0 it has pretty good torque, but the engine was designed with top-end power in mind. That's why Lexus got Yamaha to help them design the cylinder head - well, that, and the glorious sound.

This is all hindsight. The LFA was almost universally panned since it was already well behind the times after a 10yr gestation period. It didnt have the impact that Lexus had hoped. It is only 10yrs later that people realized they could have bought that gem for 1/3 of the current market price. People are actually aware of how great the 5L V8 is and it will almost certainly become an instant collectible once this engine goes out of production and any car with this engine will go up in value, most likely. Just look at how the LX570 and the current GX460 retains its value for used models.

I think these final 3 v8 Lexus cars will be sought after in the future.
Unfortunately Lexus doesn’t have the same enthusiast following like BMW or Porsche but you can’t deny amazing products. Just like the LFA has shot up in value, i think the IS500, RCF Track Edition and LC500 Inspiration Series will retain value quite well and may appreciate over time when there are no V8s.
Besides the 5.0 V8 in the Mustang, I don’t think there is a better sounding V8 motor available for purchase at an attainable amount. Especially now that Hemi is gone. The Corvette Z06 V8 is special as well, not really a fan of the LS engine in base Corvette though.
