Default $600 license and registration fees for a new car in CA?

I bought a new 2023 ES 350 last year in CA. I got a letter from the Dmv saying that my license and renewal fees will be $600 this year.

Does that sound about right? I got personalized plates if that makes any difference.

It's my 1st new car so any help is appreciated.

Thanks again.

That's cheaper than it would have been here in Nevada.

It varies on state, and even within a state. That's slightly less than I pay in my location in WA state, but seems to be on par with what I've seen on here from other Californians.

$40 :-)

I am in California. @ OP. It is about right. For personal license plate, you paid extra (in additional to normal registration fee)

It’s a lot, but that’s our fine state for you. My IS350 was $438/yr for renewal in 2019 and I did not have personalized plates.

It could be worse. To own a car in Singapore, you need a certificate of entitlement that costs $106,000 dollars (US equivalent). They charge this to encourage the use of public transport and reduce the number of cars. So a Camry would cost the equivalent of four Camrys to own in Singapore.

No offense, OP, but NOTHING surprises me any more in California......nothing.

And welcome to CL as a new poster.

Lol I never switched my plates to CA plates when I lived there, I kept renewing the TN ones.

We knew we weren't going to be there for more than a couple years.

Sometimes you can get away with that, particularly if you are active-duty military, which is often exempt from local-registration rules, but, otherwise, a lot of places take a dim view of that. In Virginia, where I live, which requires both state and (in some cases) county-registration, one is usually required to register within 30 days.

Put it on the list. Everything is expensive here. I’ll stop before polotix.

I never drove anywhere, not really. I would have switched plates if we used the car a lot.

And yes, registration is outrageous there. Here it's $70 plus $30 for personalized.
