Exclamation You Can't Fix Stupid.

The idiocy of some drivers never ceases to amaze me. This happened just a couple of miles from my house in Northern Virginia. I often drive on I-66 myself.

Here, a dump truck, at cruise-speed, tries to pass under a standard-height ramp-overpass with its bed fully-extended LOL.

Fortunately, the bridge does not seem to be badly damaged...and there were no apparent injuries or deaths. But, as of today, according to local news, Vrginia State Police are still investigating, and charges against the driver may be pending.

He/she driving the truck was pissed off at the owner of the dump truck.

That whole section of I-66 (and its access-ramps) has been under construction for the last several years, in a major redesign-project, so almost all of those ramps/overpasses are virtually brand-new and un-deteriorated with age. Perhaps that is why the ramp-structure took that harsh impact so well, and was virtually undamaged....an older structure may have been weaker.

There was or is a youtube channel dedicated to a low bridge with plenty of signs warning vertically challenged vehicles to stay away.

They don't.

The truck-bed itself was aluminum. Had it been steel, perhaps it would have done more damage to the bridge-support.

There is no accounting for stupid. A few weeks ago I was behind a large work truck entering a parking garage that had a hanging pipe stating 6'8" maximum. He got out and looked and saw that he had hit the pipe as it rolled over the top of his truck. He then proceeded to enter the garage anyway. I was able to use the 2nd' turnstile as he finally figured out the measurement was for real as hit hit the 1st beam in the garage.

The last time I saw this was in the winter with a DOT salt truck with the payload up trying to get all the salt out of the bed salting the highway. I can't imagine why this dump truck was driving this way, and how the driver didn't realize.

Although after many years they raised it, so it's now actually 12'4". But the hijinks continue, and to honor history they now refer to it as 11'8+8"

Reminds me of this incident almost 20 years ago locally, when a dump-truck’s raised garbage box struck and collapsed an overpass, crushing the truck cabin and the driver. The newer dump-trucks must have different control designs and feedback/warning mechanisms I assume ? But here is a video describing what happened in this accident …….

What happened to the driver? Should be fined, cited, or even jailed for negligence or even life endangerment.

There is no way he did not know the bed was raised.

This can be very dangerous and negligent drivers need to be punished severely for it.

https://www.nbcnews.com/news/us-news...hway-rcna33089

Here in Vegas a couple years ago, a truck struck a bridge height warning beam and caused the beam to fall on a cop driving behind him, killing the cop.

I saw that video and I thought this guy is worth looking into. One big tell is the guy is in the far left lane on what looks to be at 3 and maybe 4 lane highway. Incredibly nobody got killed or hurt. I respect driving a big truck has its challenges, especially today with many other drivers not giving them space to drive safely, but there is also some big rig drivers that are just plain dangerous. This guy seems to define that.

watch the video gojirra99 posted, and you will see how it can happen and how the driver could have no idea the bed was raised thinking they'd done some other action.

what i found pathetic from that video is how terrible the controls are on some trucks, and the lack of warning signals, especially if the driver isn't used to the truck or can't speak english!
