In 1979, why would I buy a Mercedes, bmw, toyota etc over this?

Trucks and large SUVs are a different story, USA does those the best.
For me, 2004-05 is when Cadillac finally became an appealing brand. When the CTS-V debuted I wanted one bad but couldn't afford it. The land yacht, marshmallow handling Caddy's of the past didn't appeal to me at all.

Totally agree on US trucks and large SUV's though.

Like you said he didn't care about flashy cars, a car didn't mean anything to him.

But...cost is always a factor...a Toronado was $23,000 but an Eldorado was more. When I had LSs I had them because an S Class was more money than I could pay or felt comfortable paying. Thats just the truth.

Same thing 15 years later. I said go look at an Escalade or Denali and of course, Yukon SLT is what he picked.
Because he didn't care..

His was a Continental, it wasn't boaty like a Town Car.

The town cars are crazy soft sprung, feels like they will roll worse that's a 1990s SUV somehow. Really nice in terms of ride I guess but struggle to eliminate body motions that transfer into the driver. Aka 50 feels much more busy than 80 in an LS/S/A8 type vehicle

This is what he had, a 1990 Continental, these were based off the Taurus, FWD. Did have air suspension but nowhere near as boaty as a Town Car:

No, not quite. He "liked cars". He liked GM. In any case, an '88 Tornado coupe aside from the V8 in the Cadillac was better IMO. For a Cadillac, that car looked to small. The Olds was better.

He bought a red top line Miata once on a whim once, he liked cars enough but just was NOTHING like we all are.

No, he could have afforded a Cadillac etc. etc. But he just liked Oldsmobiles, they were nicer than you think. Not Cadillac nice, but #2 for sure in GM then. He was friends with the salesman friend for 55 years who got us all the Denali last years. The salesmen always directed my step dad to the loaded but not top-line vehicles and because that's what he liked. The Toronado was kind of a pimp-mobile, at that time he and my Mom were dating and that car was getting all kinds of buzz from her. LOL.

My point is he wasn’t somebody for whom a car was something he aspired to have. People didnt work to “one day own an Oldsmobile”, that doesn’t mean they weren’t nice, it was just never an aspirational brand.

Probably an Escalade EXT. It was a Chevy Avalanche "Sport Utility Truck" given the full Escalade treatment. We had a stretch version as the limo at our wedding.

Here's an '07 with 190k miles:

Interesting....I did not know there was a stretched version, like the regular Escalade limos.

The EXT was an interesting design, but, like its sister Avalanche, had some problems with the solidness and twist-resistance of the body structure, because of that drop-down panel, behind the rear seat, which opened up the rear bed. That was probably one of the reasons they did not sell better than they did. GMC ran into (more or less) the same problems with the Envoy XUV and its overhead slide-panel, which took out most of the roof strength.

i don't think clarkson's fiat panda limo will ever be topped

it was so stretched that he actually had to cut out part of it and slightly shorten the overall length before he could legally even drive it around london haha
