So Three-Cylinder Engines are Dogs, are They?

looking at the Encore GX at 27 mpg hwy. no doubt 30-33 mpg might achievable on a long long drive. A very careful and skilled driver. Good low rolling resistance tires and absolutely no slow down or stop amd go or traffic stopping on the highway.

the significance of the official ratings definitely vary car to car... in the LS i can easily exceed the highway estimate of 25 mpg by a significant margin (roughly 35-40% over) but in the E-class i'd need to really make a conscious effort to achieve the official 21 mpg highway figure
mercedes was also definitely taking some liberties with the 14 mpg city in that car, 14 mpg 'small village' maybe lol but definitely not in a gridlocked city

40 is apparently achievable in the base model with a little luck and dedicated hypermiling. I did find one 160-mile report from a hypermiler who hit 40.8 mpg in the 1.2L (137 hp) FWD-only Encore GX using DWL (Driving Without Load) and DWB (Driving Without Brakes) techniques, with a slight tailwind, maintaining a speed between 56 and 58 when not on a hill.
For a non-obsessive in the 1.3L (155 hp) AWD version just setting the cruise at 65-75 and driving? Not a chance in hell.

Speaking of comical underperformance......I took the Jeep out to Menards just now and it needed fuel again. It's been relegated to only short trips and hauling mulch etc at this point. Freaking jarring going from my cars back to this lol!
The money drain, I really need to replace the coil and the O2s but I'm really starting to get past the point of caring. Factory coil is so weak now it can't ignite over 3k rpm the O2s are near uselessly slow so it's rich as hell.
I have nicer SUVs now and barely use the Jeep anymore, it's fate will likely be to be just given to my sister/family to use up where they live since they want a short trip vehicle they don't have to care about at all.

I'm going to be on I-66 tomorrow, for at least 25 miles like was suggested, and have my camera with me. I will post the actual reading on my trip-odometer for the average (not the instant) MPG I'm getting. You will see for yourselves.

Over performing by 67%? I have a hard time envisioning that.
Putting that Into perspective that means I would be getting 40 MPG highway in my S580. That would certainly be unlikely.
If it were possible to over perform the EPA estimates by 67% I would say the EPA estimates are absurdly wrong.

striker said he's getting 24 hwy vs 21 epa, which is only 14% over.

My car weighs around 3200 lbs. Tire pressures as recommended. I only used the A/C compressor just enough to take the edge off the heat...no more.
I told you folks that little engine would really stretch your gas dollars on the highway. I meant just what I said.

nice mpgs mike... now here's the only thing i'll ask: have you been able to verify the accuracy of the trip computer through dividing the actual distance driven by the amount of fuel used? gotta make sure we're covering all angles here, if there's a hole in the armor steve will find it haha

Typically, on level interstates, lightly loaded, at moderate speeds (55-60), I'll get an average of 45-50 MPG.......sometimes even more, like this morning. It is EPA-rated around 30. I also varied the actual fuel-use at the pump, to verify that the trip-computer is not malfunctioning.

you should make a video of your entire 25 mile trip.
