that's very true... technically for this to be a true experiment mike would have to get a reading going the opposite direction as well
but yes i've actually observed the exact same thing, we'll often get slightly better mpgs coming back from skiing in VT than we will on the way there... long island is essentially sea level but the base of the mountain will be like 1500' up

Depends on a number of factors, but one of them is that, in general, you are more likely to have a tailwind coming back from WV, particularly this time of year when winds are often from the S or SW. Although the aero-styling on most of today's vehicles helps, It probably won't affect the Mercedes as much as the Pacifica, which is higher off the ground and presents more of a wind-catcher.
Also, coming home from Beckley, you are coming DOWN what is arguably the most impressive hill on the way.......Sandstone Mountain, instead of going up. That long steep grade can affect mileage, at least in the short run.

I just close my eyes when I think of my gas bill lol, but it's fine and worth it. GMC runs fine on 89 btw. Debatable but it doesn't say premium "required" it says "recommended". I'm going to continue to drive the shyyyt out of the tank of gas to see if I can tell any difference. I'm guessing I'm losing a few horses.
For example on my Mercedes it basically warns of a nuclear blast if one drop of anything below 93 gets into the tank. It says "required" all over the place.

I honestly don't see the issue, he has a route were he can hit 50+ consistently. It's not a 2 way 400+ mile trip but he was able to do it in the situation claimed.....
It's a different standard than what the rest of us are using, we are all going 65-80mph on long trips and averaging both ways. If we did similar to MM we could find an area that is totally flat and go like 54 mph, I can sustain about 30 if I do something like that but I would probably never drive that slowly on a flat empty area like that.
