I haven't seen this mentioned, I think its within the budget, a Ford Maverick. Get a tonneau cover, it will have more cargo room than any of the small CUVs, good on gas, imo "cooler" than a CUV although I know that isn't a big factor. I know you have a Model S and X7....so the Maverick may come in handy for you when you want to haul something messy or large.

The Hyundai/Kia theft issue relates to trim levels with a physical key; if you get one with a proximity key, it's not part of that problem.

Funny you metion the Maverick. My wife asked my son about what he would want if he were to pick and he actually said a truck. Could be a consideration considering its price point. Only issue is it may go to my daughter in two years and she likely wouldn't want a truck but it's not really her decision any way so there's that. I like the suggestion, I am going to put that one in the mix.

The Maverick being unibody (same platform as the escape, bronco sport, ford focus....it should drive like a CUV rather than a truck. Hybrid option to keep fuel cost low and not as fast as the ecoboost.
If you don't like your son I would highly recommend a VW Taos. I have driven early 90s vehicles that I would much rather driver than a Taos.
