GM lays off over 1,000 salaried software, services employees

(Reuters) -General Motors said Monday it is laying off more than 1,000 salaried employees at its software and service units worldwide.
GM, confirming the layoffs initially reported by CNBC, said in a statement that "as we build GM’s future, we must simplify for speed and excellence, make bold choices, and prioritize the investments that will have the greatest impact."
CNBC said the job cuts include roughly 600 jobs at GM’s tech campus near Detroit. GM, which said about half of the cuts are in the United States, said the cuts were not because of cost cuts but came after a review of operations following the departure of Mike Abbott, executive vice president of software and services in March who left due to health reasons.
Abbott, a former Apple executive, was hired in 2023 to spearhead GM's software development efforts amid an investment rampup from the automaker in electric vehicles and subscription based services.
In April 2023, GM said about 5,000 of its salaried workers took buyouts to leave the company as it worked to hit a $2 billion cost-cutting target after it cut hundreds of executive-level and salaried jobs in February 2023.

Wrong. The GM vehicles built in their Korean plant (which produces several small Chevy and Buick crossovers for the American market) ARE Union-built...the KMWU (Korean Metal Worker's Union), which also represents auto workers in that country. It is one of several reasons why I drive an Encore GX, built in Korea, instead of a Chinese-built Envision.

Makes me glad I don't use most of that stuff (Android, Apple-Car-Play, Alexa, Bluetooth, etc.....). I use my infotainment system mostly for driving-related information, and only rarely for the NAV, as I know most of the places I drive. I do like the Sirius/Xm satellite radio, though, and having OnStar ready in case of an emergency.

I shouldn't have laughed, my lungs hurt lol.
Imagine being too old fashioned for Bluetooth of all things. Even my dad loves Bluetooth for streaming music.
I'm considering switching to iPhone so i can use carplay, or retrofitting my BMW to allow Android Auto.

ha... sorry it hurt but glad ya laughed!
i was an android user with samsungs, google pixels, etc. but last year made the move iphone now that they finally put usb-c on 'em so i can continue to use one charger for everything.
i also went iphone for 2 reasons... 1) i already had a mac and an ipad to the ecosystem all works well together, and 2) most of my fam and friends also have iphones and sharing videos/photos and imessage make things a lot easier.
also, because i use google apps on the ipad, i figured they'd work as well on iphone (as they do on android of course) and they do.
i use apple carplay on my hyundai and lexus, making things really easy. and both cars let you use siri if you hold the oem voice command button for a couple of seconds allowing me to send texts by voice or navigate somewhere.
apple maps was a big surprise to me as to how far it's come, i much prefer it to google maps now!
anyway, best of luck whatever you choose to do.
