Somewhat off-topic, but... this website was recently purchased by a friend of mine. He is a big Lexus enthusiast, fittingly. With that said, I am not going to sit here and blindly defend what he wrote here, but at the same time, it was never implied that this was going to be a vehicle for dealerships to sell to regular customers. 600 hp from a four-cylinder while meeting emissions regs and not requiring regular rebuilds? Yeah, right!

In all fairness, the idea that this would even go into production (lol) originally came from Best Car which was the original source of the article. Best Car is nicknamed "Best Wishes" because most of their predictions (like Lexus making a new IS using Mazda's inline 6) are silly pipe dream fantasies, and this is no different. Now they're going on about Toyota reviving the MR2 which is just hilarious. They really are the National Enquirer for Toyota.

A 1000+whp 2JZ is simply not drivable or enjoyable other than for drag racing and that's with a 6 cylinder. For that 2L to make 400hp, it will need 2 turbos and with lag up the wazoo, just imagine the drivability or lack of drivability especially in a heavy Lexus. Current Toyota turbo 4s are fine power wise, but what's missing is the better sound and not very good NVH characteristics. They are better off "Hybrid Maxxing" all their engines by sandwiching an electric motor between whatever engine and the transmissions, even if it is an NA engine. I think a 300hp "hybrid max" camry with the NA 2.5 will work quite well.

These are actual production-oriented engines in development. With the 400hp set to be in the next Toyota sports car most likely, be it an MR2 or Corolla GR successor.
This time, I had a special test drive of a 2.0L turbo with two output characteristics, albeit for a short time.
The combination of 300ps specification (red zone: 6200rpm) + 6-speed MT (with blipping function) is the Toyota Hilux (double cab).
The other is the Lexus "IS" in combination with a 400ps specification (red zone: 6800rpm) + 8-speed AT (paddle shifter).

This new 2.0-liter four-cylinder turbo engine is designed with motorsport specifications in mind. The existence of this engine was revealed at the Tokyo Auto Salon at the beginning of the year. In a presentation by Chairman Akio Toyoda, he said that he had asked President Koji Sato to develop an engine that could win motorsports, and a photo of a sports engine with a red head was released.
Last week, we delivered a discussion centered on information from the Auto Salon as a related article, and calculated the assumed horsepower to be 400 horsepower. According to Hiroki Nakajima, executive vice president and CTO of Toyota, the company is aiming for 400 horsepower, but is also looking at 600 horsepower by replacing each part.
Although it is not a commercial engine, it was developed with a 600 horsepower engine based on this engine. The article say nothing about 400 HP being intended for production either, only that it was displayed at a motorsport event which contradicts that if anything.
All the articles do is emphasize how much potential horsepower the engine is capable of making through modifications like those applied to the 2JZ, not how it will actually appear on a production vehicle. Hopes and dreams of Toyota leapfrogging everyone else are far and away.

Again, literally nothing from these articles suggest either the 400 or 600 HP versions of this engine will be going to into production. All we know is Toyota is developing a new engine and letting journalists test it in different tunes in motorsport guise. There's zero confirmation of this engine's output in any production vehicle beyond Best Wishes' dreams.

What's most likely is that this engine will exist in varying states of tune in different vehicles, and it is apparently able to be used in both transversely- and logitudinally-mounted configurations.

The reality of it is that we know nothing about how this engine will be used and what its output will be in a production vehicle, if it goes into a production vehicle. History shows that these sort of motorsport announcements don't usually turn into tangible products.
