Default 4WD vs. 2WD

4WD vs. 2WD which one has poorer fuel efficiency? does anyone know of any articles regarding this matter?

Correct, 4WD will always have worse fuel economy.

unless its one that is rwd until it senses traction loss aka AWD G35, etc

I would say an AWD or 4WD vehicle will always have lower (if only marginally so) gas mileage than an otherwise identical 2WD vehicle. Not only because of the reasons mentioned already - drivetrain loss - but also because of the added weight.
