There was a reason the LS 430 was 1sr and the Phaeton 2nd to last in the Car and Driver review. Unless you have bought VW bugs your whole life and a VW loyalist to the extreme, there is no reason, IMO to buy this car over their own A8, let alone the competition. Sorry Seize, not feeling ya. We can still grab a beer though.
Seeing it in person, there is no presence except "dahm this is a long car".

Looks nice inside and out, but the Audi A8 is still the best looking large sedan on the road now. But I wouldn't consider buying neither of them given their poor reliability reputation.

VW has always has a large following of loyalist that pay big bucks to drive there vdubs.
I think the car will sell and am total feeling this ride, especially with a set of 22’s.
I also agree that the A8 is the best looking large sedan on the road, but am VW will price it aggressively enough to move them.
My wife drives a 02 1.8t beetle, I love the little thing but am far from a being a vdub loyalist..

As I have said many times before, the VW move upmarket is oxymoronic!! I dont know what the VAG is doing moving its 'people' car into the same arena as its upscale brand.
On sale next month 53,000 dollar Toyota Avalon!!
I have never seen one of those 40k V8 Passats, so VW should learn from that. The interior is nice though

What got me interested in the Phaeton was the W12. If you haven't driven a good V12, you have missed something. But the V8, with a few options was around 72K and the W12 wound up at around $85K if I remember right. Of course without tax and license so round them up to $79K for the V8 and $92K out the door here in Cali. Just don't see the value. And while some Lexus dealers idea of good service doesn't impress me, I just wonder about bringing my $92K Vdub in for service. I guess it gives you a chance to check out the Golf and Jetta.

Without trying to flame, the interior shots put me in a quandary. One of the bigger reasons I was also interested in the Touareg was the interior, at least the pictures. When I sat in it for myself, it wasn't that impressive. I guess the Phaeton interior is the same way. Doesn't look bad in a picture but in the flesh it isn't so impressive.

200 mph, W12, fine looking interior are all enticing but I'm still not convinced. Its not the fact that its a VW that turns me off, its the fact taht it looks like every other VW. If i was driving in the car with my mom and pointed at it, I'm sure she would say it looked like on of those Passat thingies. Spending $85K for a car that is gonna have hardly any distinguishing characteristics to the naked eye over the lower lower lower models is something I would never do. Would you pay $85K for an S Class if it looked the same as a C class? VW needs to stick with what they're good at and give the W12 and maybe even their W8 a rest. Let Audi make the luxury cars with big power numbers and bigger bodies and VW can make nostalgic/economy/cutsie cars. Hmmm, wonder if a 70's hippy revamp is in the future?
