Good guess. I was wondering what the hell it was.

Yes guys, that's the Mars Rover Opportunity moving off its base and taking a picture back.

I thought it's amazing we could get it to do that so far away and get such a clear picture (there's a bigger version available too).

That is indeed really amazing.
I am still having trouble getting really good shots from my digi cam, LOL.

And to think we put TWO right where they were supposed to go, on opposite sides of the planet Mars. The Spirit has a problem which was either flakey flash memory or more likely it seems, they just put too many files in it. Now that they've deleted a bunch of files it seems to be ok. Must be running Windows 95, hehe.

These rovers are almost as big as GOLF CARTS. Try dropping one out of a 747 and having it land without damage in a desert! That's easy compared to what NASA did. TWICE. The picture above also shows how the inflatable balloons were retracted by the shell, neatly into the sides. Besides adding stability this also made sure the Rover wouldn't get tangled in it.

Wow what if we do find out some new things about the planet? What if there was life on the Mars? What do you think NASA would do next? Amazing. I am glad that it happened in my lifetime.

It's the Mars Rover Opportunity that moved off its base! Spirit is the other one that they had data problems with but fixed. Both have a estimated life of 90 days, but hopefully they last a little longer. And as Bit said, the detail of the pics is amazing!

I think it's just a big giant conspiracy. A planet that has no carbonites is a planet not worth exploring.

Thanks, that's what I said I thought although I called Opportunity "Odyssey" which I've now corrected.

Here's a bigger version:

(Note the smooth 'circles' off to the right of the base - that's where rover's inflated casing bounced to a halt and smoothed out the dusty soil.)
