I think a combination of lighter weight, smaller wheels and tires(less rotational mass), and no limiter help those years achieve a higher top speed. Too bad it took forever to get that fast and even longer to slow down, let alone stop. I don't think I'm ever going to push my baby that hard again. 140 is pretty easy to hit, 150 is hard, and 160 requires either huge cahones or a very small brain. Yes, I'm very very stupid. Unless you have ugraded brakes I don't recommend exceeding 135. It's just not safe. But making fun of myself aside, Retrodrive, you are the MAN! That guy has the tech-know-how and the upgrades necessary.

I would also mention that Drag Coefficient of 0.28 is very low for that kind of car as well as gearing that is set up more towards top speeds (thats the reason 1st gens are fairly slow off the line). And yes, slowing down from that speed probably took more then getting there.
Although taking that car to such speeds is fairly...stupid...but life would not be complete if you did not do anything thrilling or push the edge a little.

Ummm. . . were you driving an ES250? I thought most of the models have limiters set at 140. . . I'm not sure about the ES either, but the LS, IS, SC, GS, GX, and probably even the LX should be able to get at least 140, if not more

My baby had me going bout 142-143 just under 145, no mods, but in her prime. Now I rarely get her up past 100. With 110 k miles on her back she still does me just right. Treats me better than any other lady I've had the past 12 years. 1993 SC400

Bone-stock 2001 Nissan Sentra SE (SR20) - 120 mph
I've got a witness ... but no evidence.
I'm not tryin to pull that on-video VW-meet (cone weaving) nonsense.
Oh - I was heading down to ATL to kick back. Next time I'm down there I should kick it with you ATL folks.

Listen, guys.....even aside from the legal aspects of it which I won't get into.......if you're going to do this triple-digit crap make SURE you have tires rated for it on your car and the PSI's are right. Excessive speed on a tire not rated for it is just asking for tire failure from any number of sources from heat buildup to belt separation.
Here is a general guide:

Now now...
Before I read your link, understand this... most people just try and hit some top speed and then back down to normal speeds. In these cases, I don't think tire rating is important. As long as you are not driving for extended periods of time at speeds above a tire rating, you should be fine. I would think that there are so many dangers when traveling very fast, but everyone knows there are risks. That is what makes it so exhilerating. Cops... possible crash, animal in the road... tires give out... anything CAN go wrong.
