Mmarshall: Thanks for the tip on the ES. But, from what I've found online it doesn't appear I could touch a 2002 ES for under 25 grand and that's a lot more than I want to go right now.
I just settled with the insurance company, so now I'm ready to look in earnest. At this point, I think I'll stick with an LS.
I have found a '98 locally with 70k miles that I believe is in excellent condition. It has traction control (is that standard on EVERY '98 LS?) and the Nakamichi sound system for somewhere under $19k (we ain't nee-go-shee-ated, yet)
So, what is the going price for a black/tan '98 LS with 70K and Nakamichi?

i agree 100% on this one, Jags are good cars but that reliability is crippling.

Hack, I'm really sorry about what happend & I hope your wife get's better VERY soon!
I'd stick with the Lexus if I were you........by the look of the accident damage, it looks like the car saved your wife from much more serious injury. Keep us posted.

While my wife was on her way home in the Lexus, someone turned left in front of her and, well, the attached picture tells it all. My wife was injured and is recovering but the Lexus flatlined.
So, now I've got to decide on a replacement. I love the nice, quiet of the LS. At 6' 2", I require something with room, heigth and width. I also want to stay under 20k. I'm leaning towards a '98 LS (my wife likes the round headlights).
I'm also trying to be open to any other options that I might not have considered. For example, I've always loved the look of the Jaguar XJ8.
Any advice or suggestions for me?

Re: '98 LS400
The '98 LS you are talking about purchasing sounds like a good buy. Get ready to lay down a hunk of change around 100,000 miles or so for those air shocks. They ain't cheap by any stretch of the imagination. I have never owned an LS but do know a couple of guys who have and purchased them used with 42,000 and 58,000 miles respectively and both had to have the shocks replaced a little over 100,000 miles and those things are expensive.
Warranty covered the front struts on my '99 RX300 because they were making a popping noise and there was a TSB out on them. Wasn't doing any harm except for the noise. After 35,000 miles on the replacements they are popping again. Again, this is the first vehicle I have ever owned that did that. Looks like Lexus could get it right by at least buying struts from a different manuafcturer. I don't understand.

Brickhead said it had been over a year since the post of the 'passing' of the LS.

I think a 99-2000 LS will suit you just fine. They can be had for under 20K.

Prayers for your wife, and a 21 gun salute to your loyal vehicle.
it served you well, it kept you alive, that looks pretty bad. it takes alot to crumple a 1991 LS400 like that. early 1990.s were the days before crumple zones i believe. maybe not on lexus though.
and as for the replacement, 2 suggestions:
STAY AWAY FROM THE JAG, 2 reasons. 1. you wont fit in it, the legroom is nil on that model. 2. the reliability is NOT ANYWHERE NEAR up to lexus standards. 3. Your insurance will (most likely) eat you ALIVE.
The ES probably wont work for you either, as it barely works for me. at your height, you probably wont be confortable, also, the LS400's are (arguably) more rliable than the ES's, the ES's like to leak at the valve covers,a nd have rear main seal issues (on the older ones) as well as the tranny hesitation issue on the newer ones. not to mention there is probably not ample headroom for a man of your size.
LS's with any amount of miles are fine for the most part. a few frineds of mien have them. 1 of them a member of Lexus ownersclub, is currently turning over 250,000 miles with only expected problmes (wear and tear related). nothing out of the ordinary. i knwo one person at school with a 1990 LS400, it has 433,000 miles. and a person at work with a 1991 LS400 with 386,000 miles. all have a good track record.
the LS is the way to go.
oops, i didnt catch the dates.
