Here's the way I see it:
Let's say gas used to be $1.89 per gallon and now it's $2.35 per gallon. That's a difference of 0.46 cents per gallon. Let's say you have a 17 gallon tank, that's $7.82 per fill up. Lately I've been filling up once a week, which is $31.28 per month. Now if gas prices stay the same, it's $375.36 per year. I see a pair of Gucci shoes or a round trip plane ticket somewhere. Not trying to gripe too much, I know I'm driving a Lexus and not a 4 banger Toyota that gets good gas mileage......that's just the way I see it.

Thanks for all the input. There were a lot of good points brought up here. I'm sure we've all noticed what has happened in the last 6 months or so...and what is happening daily. Many reasons ( NOT necessarily mine ) have been put forth for this.....lack of a national energy policy, OPEC greed, too many needless large SUV's and trucks, artificially low gas prices in thje past, not enough mass transit, Middle East instability and war, oil company profiteering, opposition to local drilling, people who want powerful vehicles, arguing between Democrats / Republicans, Congress vs. the White House, etc.....
I won't get involved in detail in all of the political reasons or solutions here...that is the subject for another thread, maybe, but I have found that the best way to keep the costs of filling up reasonable is to look for good, name-brand stations that have local price wars....this often happens on weekends. By doing so I've so far managed to avoid paying more than $2 a gallon for Chevron or Shell ( two good brands ) 93 octane.
