Xenthar: i think 35K is for the 540. however, the mentioned 2001 M3's price is supposedly the exact same as the IS300 which should be less than 35K.

Rominl: yeah very true. i was thinking about the M3 i was test driving which was a 2003 model which the sales rep. said that it was pretty rare to see such a recent year pre-own. that does make sense that more 3 year old M3s would be available after the lease term ends.

the two pre-owned M3s available at my local dealership were both 2003 models. they were asking around 50K for the blue one and 56K for the convertible silver (the one i test drove).

yup, last yr when i got my is3 (march 03), it was right about when the first batch of lease from 01 ended so i started to see cars around, but not that many. now you see a lot

well, at that time the m3 was too expensive to me

Default m3 or is3

Here's my 2 cents.
If I used emotion, it would be the m3. I mean...we're talking over 300 ponies. I'm scared of the reliability issues too but I'd get it and buy a warranty. Some of the used warranties have a deductible but it's still worth it. Don't really need any mods except maybe wheels.
If I used my common sense, it would be the is300. We're talking lexus reliability and craftmanship. The styling is close to the same and there are lots of mod options. AND it's already under warranty for quite some time.
There you have it...is this an emotion thing or a logic thing?

Would lexus void the warrenty of the Is300 if you added mods to make it as fast as a m3? Would they care if there was a turbo under the hood?

Im not bashing, im really asking.... i have no idea.

warrenty is a must on german cars.

M3, no doubt. B/C everything your gonna do to the IS in mods, is to meet and beat the M3. The M3 is killer stock. Only thing is I think the 2001s are the ones the engines blew. But I'd take a chance, no crap.....

M/// > IS300

The IS is good and everything, but its a BMW M///. Girls will just throw themselves at you. The handling on the M/// will never be matched. Girls will just throw themselves at you. You have 333 hp under the hood. Girls will just throw themselves at you. All your friends will be envious. Girls will just throw themselves at you.

Get the picture?

wow..nice thread...hope i am not too late to this party..

when looking for cars, one always has two battles: "emotion vs. analytical"

realistically, the IS300 will be much easier on your pocket on long term ownership. it is not an easy task in this situation as two cars are quite different..i would take the m3, as i already have a 4 dr. $35k for an 01 m3 is reasonable...btw, the Gcpe is still selling at msrp, one of the best car/deal money can buy

oh, and if you decide to pass on the m3, let me know
