BUT if it's a MB promo photo ... then uh ... dump it - like WantAnewLex suggests ... immediately.

The old myth is that "L-EX-U-S" stood for: Luxury EXported to the United States...
However, in truth, it was a word randomly generated by a computer along with a list of others and hand-picked by Toyota Motor Corp to label their new ultra-luxury division. I believe it was originally "Lexis" or something before they changed it to "Lexus".

I'm reviving this thread due to a new fact on the origin of the name "LEXUS".
I finally got my copy of "The Lexus Story" (w/ black pearl emblem)
This book is essential to every Lexus enthusiast!
In the book, it officially describes how the Lexus name was born. A list of 219 names was originally presented to the company including Vectra, Verone, Chaparel, Calibre, and Alexis.
Alexis quickly became a front-runner. It was pointed out however, that Alexis was the name of conniving Joan Collins character on "Dynasty". At the same meeting, a Lexus project manager was doodling on a notepad and dropped the "A" and created "Lexis". From there, it was a short trip to "Lexus". The group thought it had a luxurious and high-tech feel and the name was born.
The discussed theories are interesting but this is the official story behind it.
The book even shows some of the original concepts for the logo. Check these ugly things out!

Maybe it is just a made-up word like "Integra" or "Altima"? Those were never meant to mean anything - just sound nice.
