At least Google fixed their algorithm. We are decades away from the majority of cars on the road being fully autonomous.
Plus I have a feeling governments will have to step in at one point to force people to switch cars to either be fully or semi autonomous. Seeing with one person on the road that doesn't have a car with that tech, will cause chaos to the new paradigm.

I estimate driver-less cars as we know them today will never happen because of the lawyers.
I know GM did an experiment back in the 90's where they had a bunch of Buicks all drive themselves in a line down part of an HOV lane in San Diego. There were like 30 cars in a row, all about 1-2' from eachother, in their own walled off, designated lane, with magnetic sensors in the road the cars followed. So there was no outside traffic, pedestrians, etc to contend with. A system like this would require a rethink of our infrastructure, but IMO it would be very feasible one day to have autonomous interstate lanes. It probably would be cost prohibitive to do this though.

they will still be able to get places by knowing what road they're on, knowing how far they travel, in what direction (steering angle, etc.) and possibly even by recognizing land marks or signs, etc. and if they get thoroughly lost then i guess they'll pull over and say to the passenger 'your turn, i give up'
