This is why I am against this tech, at least for now. The system either has to be capable of driving itself without human intervention, or not. There is no way you can count on people to be responsible enough to "take control" when the system gets confused.

This poll from Torque News shows that Self-driving vehicles aren't safe.

Self-driving cars have been caught on camera doing ridiculously unsafe things. A Google vehicle which, are claimed to be, "never at fault" in the many accidents they have had, was recorded on video pulling straight in the path of a bus. An Uber self-driving vehicle ran six stoplights in San Francisco and blew past a pedestrian in a crosswalk.

Actually, it's the opposite....the people most likely to benefit from them (once the technology is perfected, which is a very big IF) are not the Millenials but those 90-year-olds who are too old to drive conventional vehicles. Self-driving vehicles will possibly give them more independence in life, for a longer period of time.

Screw self driving cars. Would rather take a self flying taxi drone.

Uber and Lyft are already helping home bound seniors who live in urban/suburban areas of this country and can no longer drive(you're still SOL if you live in the sticks though) I know my friend's 79 year old grandmother loves it, he downloaded the app for her and showed her how to use it a couple years ago after she gave up her keys. She loves it, says she only uses it a few times a month, but what she loves is if she gets the itch to go somewhere, there is a car at her door in 5 minutes. Doesn't have to bug her relatives for rides or set up a time for the old people white van 3 days ahead of time.

IMO ride sharing apps like Uber and Lyft are the real game changers, they are going to be what really disrupts traditional models of car ownership in the next decade, along with steering people off public transit.

This self driving car tech, I think its still in its infancy, fully autonomous cars are still over a decade away IMO. It is quite possible that it will be killed by regulations or litigation as well, if the economics and market forces are so volatile and risky, companies are going to see self driving cars as a money pit, and that will be the end of that. So far the government hasn't seen fit to shovel massive amounts of money at this initiative like they have electric cars(Tesla for example)

I can actually see self flying transport at some point in the future. But not self driving cars, ever.

It is easy to see why the Telsa slammed into the barrier look at how the lines are painted. I could see a human driver making the same mistake. Doesn't excuse the autopilot though beta testing with peoples lives is no good.

Human that would make the same mistake is not fit for driving. Most roads in NYC are ten times worse.

I'm just glad that this Darwin award winner didn't take anyone else out.

Yes that part is messed up, knowing of a potentially fatal issue and ignoring it anyway. Repeatedly.

Maybe the dude was suicidal. Good way to do it IMO, family still gets the insurance payout.

Could be. But you'd think he would know telemetry is stored Tesla and the various agencies investigating will see exactly what happened and how. Of course someone hell bent on killing themselves probably is not thinking clearly.

The thing is whether he ignored potential issues or not, he did exactly what most people are going to do with auto pilot/self driving technology. They are going to engage it and then do something else other then pay attention to the road like text, go on social media, watch something on their phone, do their nails, eat, fiddle around with something, even try to go to sleep. Why would anyone be surprised that if someone is using auto pilot or autonomous technology that they won't be paying attention 100% or the time and be ready to grab the wheel. This is why this technology is not going to work and will be so dangerous, not only is it flawed and our roads are not designed for it but it is going to change the way people drive and how they pay attention in vehicles. Does anyone really think that someone is going to engage a auto pilot system and then they are going to just sit hours on end looking at the road, foot near or over brake pedal, hands ready to grab the wheel the entire time? That is not going to happen, the technology will basically train people to do whatever they want other then pay attention to the road ahead of them. What is the point of the technology if you still have to keep full attention on the road and be ready in a instant when it screws up? Would someone really pay thousands extra to have a self driving car that they still need to basically drive or be ready to grab the wheel and hit the brakes in a instant? What is the point, what is the point of something that steers and brakes for a period of time but you have to touch the wheel every 15 or 20 seconds?

Let's have some respect. You are blaming the victim.

How is he a victim? He was a negligent moron who put everyone on the road in danger. Luckily he did not harm anyone besides himself.
