Car & Driver and Road&Track magazines are holding a test drive of the Subaru Legacy GT along with BMW 325 and the VolvoS60. I've signed up for the mid August session in the Bay Area.
Here's some info and a link:
Here is YOUR opportunity to put yourself behind the
wheel of the BMW 325i, Subaru Legacy GT Limited and
Volvo S60 and perform your own side by side
comparison. Like our editors, you will be putting the
cars through their paces in one of our ten city Ride &
Drive programs, experiencing acceleration, braking,
handling, and accident avoidance situations and
forming your own opinions.

Even without testing the BMW and Volvo besides it, it is obvious that the Subie blows the other two away on value alone......AWD and a turbo at a mid-to-high 20's price tag.

I test drove a Legacy GT, manual. Let me tell you, this is a serious performer. It holds the road like a banchee and really moves, down low and mid range.
The tach gets a little jumpy as you approach 3 grand but with practice I'm sure the throttle could be modulated. A chip is scheduled to come out soon (I've been told by a good source). The latest chip for the XT brings hp up to 250 from 210? and adds 50 plus pounds of torque.
The interior quality is better than before but it is a tough pill to swallow coming from a Lexus or the Germans. The brand image is absolutely zilch. I never thought of myself as a badge hound but I confess that with no panache and curb appeal it makes it more difficult. Further, the resale will blow, we know this.
Now, my gripes aside, I defy anyone to spend 30 grand on a better new car.

If you want a Lexus-type interior there is the 3.0 H6 L.L. Bean Outback with 250 HP / 219 lb-ft. It sits up a little higher so it won't have quite the Legacy GT's handling, but it does have the same basic AWD system as the GT automatics. GT manual trannies use a different viscous-type system. Once you see the LL Bean's trim inside, I don't think you'll be disappointed. Keep in mind, though...the LL Bean has a Lexus interior because it has a Lexus price...33K.
