WRONG!
with the latest OBD attachments and computerized car management systems, it is very easy to change the mileage on almost all European cars. If you crack one european cars, you almost can do them all.

Well, it still gets back to what I said. The days of just simply unhooking the cable and spinning the drill are long gone. Some of you guys may consider altering today's speedmeters with computer programming "easy " , but unless you really know what you're doing, it is anything BUT easy. And even if you can pull it off, today's Carfax, title searches, etc.... are far more sophisticated than in the past. If a car's recorded mileage suddenly jumps back quite a bit, the chances are it will show up.

In fact, there is a Federal law that says it you DO get a new speedometer / odometer or gauge cluster and it starts over again at 0 miles...or a used one with fewer miles....a sticker has to be placed in the car stating this. And I found out years ago when I traded in a Mazda that had a replaced one...it can affect the resale value, because even if the car is legit with the sticker, customers still tend to shy away from any car with altered mileage, even if legit.

What does the guy that totaled his M3 have to do with them purchasing a new M3 at invoice? Yeah it sux that the dealer messed up his car, and yeah it sux that he has to go through all of this, but what played out was exactly what was supposed to happen: car gets in accident, someone tries to fix it rather than total it, you dont want to have a fixed car so you get an elevated estimate, car gets totaled by insurance co, you go on your merry way with a blue book retail check from insurance co.

By him asking the dealer to pay retail for his used car (will never happen at any dealership anytime anywhere....even for a mint condition M3 vs a totaled one) and then asking for invoice on a new one?? That's just plain greedy and no wonder the dealer told him to get lost and deal with the insurance company. A fair settlement would have been to give him retail for his totaled car, and retail on a new one, or trade in value on his old one and invoice on his new one. But to get both is pretty silly. My 2 cents....
