My dealership was giving them away, might want to check at yours, think it was 1 of those test drive things and the gift was the book.
If you buy the book is it the black leather with the black emblem

I went out with my girl for our anniversary dinner on Friday, and one of my gifts was the Lexus Story. I can't seem to put it down, its like crack 4 me . Anyway boys I just want to let you guys know how good this book is, let me tell you I'm not much of a reader and I finished this one already.

JUST the post I was looking for. I was trying to make up my mind whether to buy The Lexus Story or Lexus: The Relentless Pursuit. I'm in the process of ordering 2 copies now after having seen what the book is like! Thanks!

I saw my first copy of The Lexus Story in my dealer's waiting room a long time ago: It had a black pearl emblem and leather binding and was tucked inside a black leather slipcase, also with a black pearl emblem. That's two leather "wrapers" and two black pearl emblems with embossed black titles. The price I recall was $100, then, which seemed like a loss leader with the quality of the paper and bindings.
Later the dealer started "showcasing" the bp-leather-embossed black title edition in a white cardboard box for $50. Since it was mostly about the LS400-LS430, I passed.
Then I saw it at Amazon for $34 (suggested retail $50) and I ordered one. Before the book arrived, I fell in love with and bought a nice silver/black CPO 2003 LS430 with 13k5 miles and told my salesman (the CPO manager) that I wanted a free copy of The Lexus Story with the car. He said sure. Before I picked up the car, the Amazon copy arrived: It had black cloth binding and a chrome emblem with a white title on the black cloth. The dealer then gave me a copy when I picked up the car: Black pearl, black leather, black embossed title, but NO SLIP CASE

I sent the Amazon copy back for a refund.
Actually, I suspect that there were three (or more) printings of the book. I never checked the copyright dates of the copies, so I'm not sure. The sales magager said the dealer had to buy 600 copies or some outrageous number like that and they had a bunch of them left.
Since the black pearl/leather edition goes up through the 2004 version of the LS430, they are getting out of date. Dealers might make a good price, if not a "freebie" if they're sitting on a lot of inventory.
