A completely stock LS400 is considered to be a VIP chasis, as goes with Aristos, Cimas, Crown Magestas, Q-45's, etc. Now your not going to get recognition at VIP meets, or what have you, because, people like to see VIP cars with some VIP style.
Robert, {-.-}, chimed in on vipstylecar early on to give us his definition of VIP and what not, and him being the president of quite a large VIP club in Japan, I tend to believe in what his opinions are.
List of cars currently considered to meet the requirements as a VIP car in Japan-
Celsior
Aristo
Crown Magesta
Q-45 (sorry, I am not aware of the Japanese names for the nissans... its the cima and the..?)
M-45
and recently, the Mazda Sentia (929), has started getting some recognition

in my opinion... like the consensus said, whats makes VIP is the car, pretty much a big body sedan... Not the choice of rims, what body kit you use. however, when I went to Japan last month, the people I met at shows and meets, I think VIP is also a "culture" (will explain below)
there are many different aspects of VIP out there. Your crazy, widebody, many exhaust tips, candy paint, with just as crazy as an interior... Then you have the simple VIP from Auto Couture, Sessions, Junction Produce, which is a clean body kit, nice wheels, and simple accents to make your car that much cleaner.
The list of cars that Sc400texas put down is pretty good. If I miss any, I am sorry
Toyota
Aristo
Crown
Crown Athlete
Crown Majesta
Celsior
Century
Nissan
Cima
Cedric
Gloria
Q45
President
For those who have been to VIPStyleCars.com you see how new the VIP scene is here in the US. There are many different animated opinions on what EXACTLY VIP is... For us Lexus owners, technically, we are already VIP with the cars we have. Just mod it the way you want and just know that your are fortunate to mod an already expensive vehicle. Knowing that we are that priveledge to do this to our car, THAT IS WHAT VIP IS to me (culture)

Wow John - You summed it up nicely! We can close the thread now
(j/k)
Your definition is now my definition. "Lexus VIP" is class and culture.
EDIT: Another good explanation: http://www.velocity.isfaster.com/vip/vip.htm

There are alot of nice cars that are 1993 and older but the value of the car is not we want EXPENSIVE VIPcars in the club. Most folks I know are getting rid of the Older cars for newer cause VIP is alot more impressive as a Newer car with less Mods then an Older car with alot of Mods.
"VIPstyle has to start with a VIPcar........ if the car is not VIP then to me it cant become VIPstyle".

Might be slightly off-topic, but Plymouth, back in the late 1960s, used the designation "VIP" for their full-size, top-of-the-line Fury sedan, It was intended to compete with the then-Chevy Caprice and Ford LTD.
(Never had a chance ro test-drive one, but I would have liked to. I later, in the early 70s, owned a quite similar Chrysler Newport)

This thread is 12 years old. As for what VIP means, its just the latest ricer fad, but I'm surprised that term was being used 12 years ago. VIP means buy old clapped out Lexus SC300/400, LS400 or a GS for $2,000 and ghetto mod it to ride 1" off the ground with negative camber and slap some huge wheels on it with tires that are too small for the wheel. Basically its a good way to ruin your car IMO and look like a fool. The culture around it is usually a bunch of broke teenagers that hack the cars up for that "look".
