Default Toyota ranks top in Japan's 1st durability study

Toyota ranks top in Japan's 1st durability study - - Reuters / September 02, 2004 - - Source: Automotive News

TOKYO -- Toyota Motor Corp. took the top spot in Japan's first independent study of long-term vehicle dependability, cementing its reputation as a quality powerhouse following years of similar performance overseas.

The study by consultancy J.D. Power & Associates was based on responses from 18,251 drivers in Japan surveyed at up to 50 months of car ownership when questioned about scores of specific problems ranging from handling and braking to sound systems.

The same survey is closely watched in the United States, where dependability is a major consideration when customers buy a new car and where auto makers often cite their survey scores in advertisements.

Honda Motor Co., Japan's third-biggest auto maker, came in second for vehicles purchased in 2002, followed by Nissan Motor Co., J.D. Power announced on Thursday.

Nissan scored second after Toyota for cars bought in 2000 and 2001, followed by Honda and Mazda Motor Corp., which were both below the industry average.

Toyota outperformed in all three categories, with 89 problems per 100 vehicles for purchases in 2002, against the industry average of 104 and 170 for DaimlerChrysler AG's luxury Mercedes-Benz brand at the bottom of the chart.

Toyota has long dominated surveys on vehicle dependability in the United States, with its Lexus luxury marque winning top honours in 2004 for the 10th year in a row.

Rankings for the three surveys were as follows:

Vehicles purchased in 2002:

1) Toyota
2) Honda
3) Nissan
4) Subaru (Fuji Heavy Industries Ltd.)
5) Mazda
6) Mitsubishi Motors Corp.
7) BMW
8) Volkswagen AG
9) Mercedes-Benz

Vehicles purchased in 2001:

1) Toyota
2) Nissan
3) Honda
4) Mazda
5) BMW
6) Subaru
7) Mitsubishi Motors
8) Volkswagen
9) Mercedes-Benz

Vehicles purchased in 2000:

1) Toyota
2) Nissan
3) Honda
4) Mazda
5) Mitsubishi Motors
6) Mercedes-Benz
7) Subaru
8) BMW
9) Volkswagen

To make you even happier, Toyota is on top in the first ever Mexican satisfaction survey as well

August 30, 2004

Mexicans rank Toyota best in ownership satisfaction - survey

Westlake Village, California - Toyota ranks highest in satisfying vehicle owners in Mexico, despite having been in this market only since 2002, according to the J.D. Power and Associates 2004 Mexico Vehicle Ownership Satisfaction Study released on Friday.

The inaugural study, which is based on interviews conducted with 3,577 owners of new 2002 and 2003 model-year vehicles, presents automotive manufacturers and consumers for the first time with an objective measure of vehicle ownership satisfaction in Mexico. Overall owner satisfaction is based on customer experiences with their vehicle in four measure areas: vehicle quality and reliability; vehicle appeal (which measures satisfaction with the design, style, performance and comfort of the vehicle); dealership service (which measures satisfaction with the dealer service department); and ownership costs.

Toyota ranks highest overall among high-volume makes, performing particularly well in the areas of ownership costs and vehicle quality and reliability. Honda, which entered the Mexican market in 1995, closely follows Toyota in the rankings, performing particularly well in the areas of vehicle appeal and service satisfaction.

"The fact that Toyota and Honda, two relative newcomers to the Mexican market, have already made a strong impact on owners illustrates the highly competitive nature of the automotive industry in Mexico," said Steve Witten, executive director of automotive research at J.D. Power and Associates. "Increasing competition and product proliferation, overcapacity and changing customer expectations are just a few of the issues that have altered the competitive landscape of the Mexican automotive market."

The high-volume industry average score for vehicle ownership satisfaction is 687 out of a maximum of 1,000 index points. Following Toyota and Honda in the rankings above the industry average are Pontiac, Jeep, Nissan, Chrysler, Dodge and Renault, respectively.

Respondents were interviewed in Mexico's three largest auto markets - Mexico City, Guadalajara and Monterrey - and were asked to evaluate their experiences during the first 6 to 24 months of ownership.

Not far from world domination eh?

Since I came from Taiwan, let me contribute something there.

For the first time EVER Lexus is looking to become the #1 selling import brand in Taiwan in 2004. So far this year until August the unit sales of Lexus is about 2000 units ahead of the #2, Benz.
This is an amazing achievement of Lexus since the "twin-B" (Benz and BMW) have always been regarded like the unshakeable GOD there and have stayed perrenially at the #1 and #2 import brand sales spots (BTW import brands in Taiwan also includes mainstream brands such as VW and Mazda).

Source (in Chinese but you can scroll down and look at the unit sales table and still see the numbers and rankings):

In other news, J. D. Power Asia Pacific conducted a customer satisfaction index (CSI) study in 2002. Lexus topped the chart with 882 points, followed by Toyota (!) with 806 points and then Mercedes-Benz with 802 points.

Sorry, guys...my last reply got chopped off.
What I wanted to say was that I find it very hard to believe the ranking of Mitsubishi, BMW, and Mercedes in the top 10. All three are companies that have had many corporate and vehicle problems lately.
