Default illegal streetracing leads to death of Marine and pregnant girlfriend

A street race between two drivers on a North County freeway ended tragically Wednesday

The accident happend on the southbound Interstate 5 near Palomar Airport Road.

Two drivers were racing at speeds of 100 mph, according to the California Highway Patrol.

The driver of one of the vehicles collided with a cement truck as he tried to change lanes

Witnesses told investigators that the red car was racing with a Honda CRX that was painted with blue primer.

Thats horrible what happened, Its too bad they don't have more information about the car. A unpainted dropped CRX with a spoiler only narrows it down to like... 8 million people. No one got a lisence plate?

I wish that this racing economy cars ment to carry people from point A to point B would end. At least do it on the track if you have to race your ****box.

"Some" people ? It's a lot more widespread than you think. A number of people in these forums talk about street racing. Much of the auto press and journalism tend to glorify it, too...along with the enthusiast magazines. "Stop-light sprints", "Who can take who", etc......

True. I see many people trying to out-sprint each other at the stop light. Although most of these 'races' don't last more than 1 or 2 blocks. It wouldn't suprise me if these people are the 'road rage' type.

That's such a shame.

I agree with mmarshall. I can't count the number threads I read on CL or any other forums that start with, "I pulled up to the light, the guy in the car next to me looked at me, and we knew it was on...blah, blah, blah......then he shut it off...."

It's been going on for tens of years. The media is just acting like people just started racing. Very unfortunate.
With these family cars and basic transportation getting faster and faster, I can't go to Wal-Mart without someone trying to race me. IN MY ES!

Yeah...the craze as we know it got started in Southern California in the late 40's after World War II. Many of the same guys that first started it......in 1932 (Deuce) Fords with aftermarket flathead V8's....were the same guys that started the motorcycle gangs like the Hell's Angels......mostly ex-military fighter pilots who no longer had their planes or the " excitement " of air-to-air combat to look forward to. So....to get a reasonable substitute, they looked to their customized and big-engined cars and bikes. These machines gradually evolved into the street rods and chopped coupes of the 50's with mostly Chevy and Mercury small-block V8's and then the first big full-size muscle cars like the Chrysler 300 and Olds Rocket V8's, the mid-size and pony "muscle" cars of the sixties, the detuned retro muscle cars of the 70's and 80's, and finally, the Japanese import-tuner craze of today....though there signs of the 60's "muscle-car" era returning with new designs like the 2004 GTO and 2005 Mustang.
