What's the mileage on that thing? Whatever it is, $4.45 million is probably a bit steep.

Personally, I wouldn't have dropped much more than a couple hundred bucks on it. I have no interest in old cars whatsoever. What an UGLY machine!

Well, again.....beauty is in the eye of the beholder. It may appear ugly to your modern eyes, but many car historians consider the classic designs of the 1930's to be some of the most beautiful cars ever built, like the Auburns, Cords, Dusenbergs, Bugattis, French Delahayes, Chrysler Airflows, Pierce Arrows, Maybachs, Cadillacs, and so many others. The problem is that these cars were EXPENSIVE, and with the worldwide depression, few people had money to spend even on regular cars, much less beauties like these. Then came World War II and the curtailing of civilian car production, period.

Whether it is still there today I don't know. I have a picture of it in a very recent classic car book of mine that shows it on display just a few years ago in a Paris museum. ( I would post a picture and the story but I'm still figuring out this new computer). They didn't say how much was paid for it...or whether it was donated. That is why I started the post with the statement that the huge price was only a guess of mine.

It's interesting that, while Hitler's deputies like Goering and Gobbels chose Maybachs almost without exception ( it was considered, quality-wise, the best car in the world at the time ), he himself had a regular long-wheelbase Mercedes convertible.....a cheaper car.

Besides.....as far as "****" memorabilia goes.......by the terms of Hitler's own will written on the day of his (and Eva's) suicide, all his personal possessions were to go, not to the Party, but to the German State ( what was left of it ), so at least technically they were no longer " **** ".

Neither does common sense.

Anyhow, back to that $4.5 million Dusenburg. Anybody have any idea what the tax might be on that purchase? Obviously, it was sold at Pebble Beach, but that doesn't mean it will be registered in CA or subject to whatever tax the CA DMV may charge on a used car sale.

Maybe the guy caught a break and they recorded the sale as a 100 dollar "work truck" ....

Default One-of-a-kind collectable

Ab Jenkins’ 1935 Deusenberg Speedster known as the “Mormon Meteor” weighed 5750 lbs and was powered by a DOHC 4-valve naturally-aspirated Lycoming straight-8 aircraft engine displacing 6876 cc, or 419.6 CID. It was reputed to produce 320 bhp at 4200 rpm (425 ft lbs of torque at 2400 rpm). It was capable of 0-60 in 10 sec and a 20 sec ¼ mile. (The stock Deusey of that era sported a 260 CID engine, with an optional supercharger developed for its racing cars.)

At Bonneville, the car ran an average of 135.47 mph for 24 hours (including pit stops) and one hour at 152.145 mph. Jenkins was running around 160 mph when he crossed the finish line of the 24 hour trial. With that unmuffled aircraft engine and hydraulic drum brakes it must have been one scary ride.
