Famous "Mormon Meteor" Duesenberg stars at this year's Pebble Beach Auction presented by Gooding & Company.
The 1935 "Mormon Meteor" Duesenberg SJ Speedster created quite a buzz prior to this year's Pebble Beach Auction, and proved that attention was warranted when it sold for US$4.455 million on Sunday evening. The famous Duesenberg was the top-selling car at the Pebble Beach Auction and set a world record as the highest price ever paid for an American automobile at auction. It was also the fourth highest price paid for a collector car at auction in the last decade.
The featured "Duesenberg Special" and its owner/driver Ab Jenkins set numerous speed and endurance records on the Bonneville salt flats in Utah in the 1930s. Jenkins renamed the car the "Mormon Meteor" in 1936, the winning name submitted to a contest in Salt Lake City's Deseret News newspaper.
Jenkins was a successful building contractor in Salt Lake City in the 1920s who first brought racing to the Bonneville Salt Flats in 1925 when he challenged the Union Pacific Railroad to a race across Bonneville. In 1939 Jenkins was elected mayor of Salt Lake City.
