Default Crash Woes for BMW 5Series ?

BMW’s new 5-series range has run into trouble in the crucial Euro NCAP crash tests.

According to an inside source, the initial tests would have led to the car being given a low three-star rating. The source claimed that the car’s problem was ‘structural’ rather than a series of minor problems.

BMW denied this but admitted that the 5-series has been crash-tested. However, BMW has ‘agreed’ with Euro NCAP that the tests were hampered by ‘inconsistencies’. The impact tests are likely to be re-run in the near future.

‘We genuinely hope for, and expect, a five-star rating,’ a BMW spokesman told Autocar.

Thumbs up

That is very, very odd considering the outgoing 5-Series was one of the safest (structurally) production cars ever tested.

I'm guessing this might have something to do with side-impact. I was just on the EURONCAP site a couple days ago, and they said the 5-Series test would be out in November, I think.

But a 3-star rating for the new 5 would shock me. Then again, I completely trust EURONCAP, they're the best out there.

Prius got a 5-star rating.

Maybe it has something to do with the aluminum/steel bond by the firewall.

Hmmmm...Interesting point....I think the previous 5-Series scored better than the new one in IIHS test...Apparently there seemed to be some intrusion into the footwell area, which probably means problems elsewhere...
