Toyota to launch hybrid Camry in U.S.
Yomiuri Shimbun
Toyota Motor Corp. announced Saturday plans to release in North America in 2006 a hybrid version of the Camry, which is the best-selling passenger car in the United States.
Toyota hopes to sell tens of thousands of the cars in the first year, aiming to dominate the hybrid car market in the United States, where fuel-efficient hybrid vehicles are gaining popularity due to rising gasoline prices caused by soaring crude oil costs.
In 2003, Toyota sold about 410,000 Camrys in the United States, gaining the top sales ranking for the second consecutive year.
In the United States, Toyota is selling the hybrid Prius, which is so popular that there is a six-month waiting list for delivery due to a huge backlog of orders. The nation's top automaker hopes to sell 47,000 hybrid Prius cars this year and 100,000 next year, Toyota officials said. The launch of the hybrid version of the Camry--Toyota's most marketable car--is expected to result in a rapid increase in demand for hybrids, leading to mass production of the vehicles and reduction in their prices, which are high compared with gasoline-powered vehicles.
In a countermove, Honda Motor Co. will put on sale at the end of this year a hybrid version of the Accord in the United States.
Ford Motor Co. of the United States also launched for autumn a hybrid sport-utility vehicle, intensifying competition in the hybrid car market.

I think a hybrid ES shouldn't be far behind.

It's no surprise that the '02-current Camry is an example of a no-frills, practical and reliable car for the average Joe. Taking it to the hybrid version is the next logical step, and I can't wait to see it
