Yeah, just out of curiosity, how durable are lexus trannys, in the early LS400s and SC400s? Are they capable of well over 200K miles without problems?

There have been plenty of Lexus cars with over 200K on original components. Even a couple of the ES250s have made it to the 300K mark!

Ford products in general tend to vary quite a bit in their reliablity and quality control, in spite of the fact that Consumer Reports gives them mostly an average rating. The Focus got off to a terrible start, but has recently improved quite a bit. The bread-and-butter Fords...the Taurus, especially...seem to vary quite a bit even on the same asembly line. One Taurus will go 200,000 miles reliably, and the one right behind it will be in the shop more than it is out. F-150's vary somewhat less but are still not consistant. Explorers, like the Taurus, vary quite a bit......obviously, the one that went 295,000 miles was an exceptional one....and perhaps one that was extremely well-cared for.

Well pointed out. You've also got cars like the Crown Victoria which just run for ever. Then again, it all comes down to maintenance. Look after the car and it, in turn will look after you.

Default nice

Its good to see American cars getting better. I saw Consumer Reports that the German makes are the real lemons the past 5 years, American cars are actually surpassing them! I've never owned anything but Japaneese cars 1990+ but if the US can make a long lasting car they will get my business moving forward.

The only thing that troubles me is the American styling. With the exception of the Corvette and the 300M I don't care for much of the offerings.

Even though I have no respect for the late model Mustangs, those commercials are sweet! Like the National Anthem playing on the engine, or Steve McQueen (sp?) dropping by for a spin.

If anything, I really wish American manufacturers would stick to American design instead of making the cars look somewhat European, etc. Some of the Fords in particular are very American looking.

I guess it's just your luck. Everyone in my family had a Ford at one point or another, and the one that went the longest actually broke 90k miles!

That's actually amazing. But I wouldn't recommend Ford to anyone anytime soon.

Take it from somone who has owned 8 ford rangers..... yes 8..... all in the mid 90's bodystyle (mostly 97's).
Ford cars suck, ford suv's USUALLY have tranny problems (i have had 3 explorers), but the ford rangers are indestructible!

I have NEVER had one single problem from any of my 8 rangers... that's 8 times i had the chance to have something go wrong with 8 different trucks and NOTHING ever happened,.... ever.

I have had-

1- 89 xlt

1- 93 xlt

2- '95 xlt

1- '96 xlt

3- '97 xlt

Currently i have a '97 xlt, my second white '97 ranger. All of them 5 speed, standard cab, 2 of them stepside.

No problems at all drivetrain wise. I have had to replace a few door pin triggers for the dome light on a couple of the trucks @ $16 each, but no biggie. One had to have an oxygen sensor, but It always started and always ran great.

Explorers on the other hand....... All three of mine needed the tranny rebuilt because the driveline was from a ford ranger (factory flaw, we'll call it) and couldn't pull the extra weight.

My current '97:
