Is the regular 604 HP Mercedes Benz CL65 AMG not powerful enough for you?

that's exactly what i was talking about. i know for sure if it's 700hp (even at wheels) supra, skyline, etc... no one will complain, maybe no one would even make a thread for it

The main issue here, and, as I said, even the auto enthusiast mags are starting to get concerned...is when is more and more power simply too much....and unneeded? .....especially with companies like M-B that have reliability problems and could FAR better use the money in enhanced quality control. I note the posts that say that no one is complaining about 604 HP and 738... but PLENTY of people complain about M-B's lack of quality control, which may be at least partly a direct result of so many dollars going into power and engines instead.
And....then......where do you finally draw the line on power? Is 300 HP enough for the average street car? 400HP? 500 HP....like on the new BMW M5 and several AMG's? 600 HP...like on the CL65 AMG? 700-800 HP?
And, hey, why stop THERE? Why don't we just build 1000 HP monsters, like the V12 Cadillac Cien?
S - -t, why even stop THERE? We can build and sell funny-cars and top-fuel dragsters for street use that will turn 3-second, 300-plus MPH quarter-miles. And why even stop THERE? We can put in the F-15's double GE-afterburner-jets in that will propel the car to Mach 2.5...approximately 1600 MPH.
And.....while we're at it.......why be a bunch of chumps and even stop THERE? F - - it, we'll just go all-out and build a car with NASA's Apollo Saturn V system that develops 7,600,000 pounds of take-off thrust.
Nah.....that wouldn't work...........some of you guys would STILL be complaining.........

People like Leno can either afford, or have friends who have, private flats and race tracks where they can legally drive their cars at any speed they want and is safe...but not on public roads.

Yes, Jay has some fire-breathers, but he generally doesn't mix them in with everyday traffic....especialy in the gridlock L.A. basin. Despite being a professional comedian and entertainer, he is a responsible person.

MMarshall, i think you might be going just a bit over the top here. I and I am sure a LOT of others would agree that 700hp would be very impractical in almost any scenario. But the purpose of the car is not practicality! Remember one thing. All styles/fads/whatever are cyclical. I think it is correct that at some point either governmental regulation or the high cost of fuel or insurance will put an end to vehicles like this. For a while...then they will begin to resurface again. Right now, there is such a huge explosion of interest in EXTREMELY high performace vehicles that the technology can barely keep up. Insert snowball effetc analogy here.

Was there truly any need for Chrysler/Plymouth to build a version of the Satellite in 1967 with slicks on the rear, quad exhaust, a 487ci engine and the ability to run 10.1 in the quarter right out of the showroom? NO! But they did, and I'm sure 80% of the people thought just like you that it was ridiculous and irresponsible, etc.

Interest in cars such as these may fade eventually. But it will also return. This is just part of the technology cycle. All being fueled by what we here at CL all have a passion for, Automobiles and performance!

Haha no I'm not saying no one should be allowed to have anything they have full right to have or own if they can afford it, who am I. The question can still be asked though and that question is 'whats the point?' The only real answer to that in most cases when it come to excess is, 'because I can and want to' and that is often but not always fueled by self indulgence and or greed thats my point, regardless what kind of car it is, but then again I have noticed that most enthusiast tend to have a lack of restraint when It comes to autos so go figure (sorry I thinking out loud on the keyboard). Anywho people like Jay can do what ever the heck they want with their money. I will never say that a person can't be allowed to have something they have full right to posess, I can really care less I mean people have been known to do dumber things with the dollar bill. Still though I can't help but wonder sometimes and ask, why? Whats the point? particularly with things that will never be used. I just find that to be quite wasteful. The picture is so much bigger. Just food for thought. Ironic coming from someone who owned multiple Lexus(es) ....Ha because I can and want to thats why (smile).

And yes we all myself included probably need to limit the amount of unhealthy foods we consume each week or year we'ed probably live a lot longer and be a lot healthier. I see nothing wrong with that do you?

Yes...I was just trying to make a point. Sometimes you have to go over the top to do that.

I am old enough to have grown up with some of the later muscle-cars of that era. I remember them well. Drove a few of them myself, but not irresponsibly.

Yes, Chrysler did build some 400-HP-plus cars in that era...mostly dual-quad Hemis and some specially modified 440 six-packs......as did Corvette with the 427 triple-deuce carbs and the Ford Galaxie 427 dual-quad.
Chrysler, however, had a company policy that dual-quad Hemis were NOT to be sold purely for street use....only single-quad ones. In fact, dealers were prohibited from selling the dual-quads to customers who could not prove that they had taken a course in high-performance driving and had relatively clean insurance, police, and driving records.
Unfortunately, Ford and GM, to my memory, did not do this. All they wanted to do was make money anyway they could.

If one person has the cash to do it then so be it, that is what captialism and the market economy is all about. who cares if it is impractical to most people, the bottom line is this is america, If I can afford to buy it and someone is willing to build it then we have a deal.

I think I'm done with this becuase I feel my political panties getting twisted into a knot.
