Let's hope it is not head gaskets...the older Subaru 2.5's were notorious for that. But they still have the best AWD systems in the $30,000 and under range....always did.

700HP street cars? Enough said.

I've suspected a leak for some time, as I could smell what seemed to be burning coolant, but I could never find evidence. This week, after short 4-mile trip and letting my car sit in the garage for a few days, I found evidence of the coolant on top of my engine block. I guess during my normal driving routine it had a chance to completely burn off/evaporate out of existence. It's not the radiator, so I'm hoping it's nothing more serious than a hose problem.

We'll see...Not exactly the best present one could hope for.

...

Anyway, I can see the appeal of high HP...I know I would want my next car to be even more power/faster than my current one, even though I don't even drive it to its full potential. Not to mention, my current car's power outclasses my driving skill. Putting even a good, safe driver accustomed to a 300HP car into a 700HP car is asking for trouble.

Well as stated before, Ferrari thinks its total hogwash. Great engines in cars that can't handle them. Not to mention the sheer weight of these cars. Quite amazing they go so fast. But clearly, Benz has never won any handling contest. And they refuse to build manuals. Instead of really trying to tackle M head on, they basically resorted to overpowering them. Their AMG product line is also much vaster than the M models now. Amazing, since the 1st AMG car "official" was the C32 what, 10 years ago.
Clearly, stock, nothing in the luxury arena comes close to matching the power and accelerationof a CL.S 65.

You didn't get to drive the SL500 with active body control (ABC) at the Mercedes event I don't think. It was spectacular.

And they refuse to build manuals.
BMW has abandoned them also for the M models, they have SMG - not the same as a manual.

Neither...you're getting confused with RennTech

well it's the torque...massive amounts of torque

and they do build manuals....albeit they suck a LOT. I have shifted? (more like YOINKED THE ****ING OUTTA IT) a SLK350...it doesn't feel right.

Why don't you start a website that can concentrate on car quality. That should be really exciting. You can post responses to yourself.

If you can truly afford a Mercedes...and especially of you can affort this one...then who cares if it isn the shop...you have at least one or two more cars to drive.

Pushing the limits is what makes things great. Nav in high cars trickles down to lower models. Hopefully some horespower will too. Thanks Mercedes.

mmarshal is in the minority here so don't listen to him. Keep bringing these amazing cars to market.

i thought the cl65 couldn't handle any more power becuase of the tranny's limit and that the engineers actually detuned the engine to make less torque because of it. there was no mention of the tranny in terms of enhancements other than "Power is transferred to the rear wheels through a five-speed automatic transmission and to minimize wheel spin KLEEMANN has fitted the car with a locking differential."

I guess, if you find flagrant patronization in a disrespectful manner funny.

my thoughts

i agree with some points here and totally disagree with many points

i agree that mb should spend more r/d funds to correct quality and reliablilty issues that are plauging their models instead of going after power numbers but heck can you really blame them.. studies have shown that people are after horsepower numbers and trq nums more then how many times you have to take a escort as a loaner..(car being in for svc) MB once had built a car from 92-94 which had succeeded in delivering both power numbers and tremendouse lexus like reliabilty which was a joint effort between mb and porsche. its was called the corvette stomper the 500e and e 500 (as of 94).. this car was bult by hand from amg and fine tuned by porche all hand bulit and delivered bcak then some staggering power numbers like 322 hrp with no breakdown problems..

i disgaree that 700 hrp is not realistic for daily driving.. why isnt it . i mean afterall when building a top notch stero system for your ride we put in maybe 1000 watts + of power but do we really play it that loud .. no , the power is for better clarity and purer sound reproduction.. having more horsepower and trq means pwer is more readily avail meaning easier to accelarate to pass or put a smack down on someone...

look at streeking and his work of art sc ..785 horsepower (if i rem correctly) but is a comfortable daily crusier as quiet as a puppy but if needed will wake up the dead and then some..

supras are running daily drivers at 1000 hrp so why not.. as long as the car in question was bulit as a pkge to handle the power saflely and deliver the power realiably why not i say

go for it for that whats this game is all about . again i say and be safe out there

RIP little cam

It was meant to be funny.

I still think anyone who is truly into cars should appreciate any kind of advances...not bash them. Actually, I appreciate advances of all kinds. What about medical technology. There are new items tested...some are ridiulous and cost prohibitive...but they may inspire or give rise to something useful in the future.

Go MB.

Whatever ....................... What are you trying to say again...........? My brain is too feeble to understand that sentence.

Like I said before, why is everyone getting so uptight about this?? Have I touched on a raw nerve? Give me a break please............

This isn't exactly a valid point. Acura built some truly great cars years ago too. Unfortunately, the Legend GS and NSX aren't doing much for them now, are they? Mercedes present track record speaks for itself.

I think you're a little confused. No one said a word about a 700HP car not being a good daily driver. No one is going to argue that there are not plenty of high-HP cars out there that also perform admirably as a daily vehicle.

The point is that no one NEEDS 700HP. I don't see how a V8 GS driver could NEED more power for passing or merging unless they're on the autostrada duking it out with Italian exotics on a regular basis. If somes NEEDS more than 300HP they're either:

A.) A maniac.
B.) A truly horrid driver.

There's nothing wrong with wanting more HP and having more HP, provided you can handle it safely and responsibly and don't do it "just because" (that argument seems a little silly to me).
